Hey guys, I love my 6th gen.. I also love rwd. I think it would be cool to transform my 7a into a rwd monster. Has anyone ever attempted to do this. My plan is to convert it and swap a 4agzte in there with a goal of 275 rwhp. This is a plan I am doing to start working on in about a year so I'm preparing my drawing board. As of now, I am swapping in a 4agze over the fall and winter for next spring.

The answer is: no. There have been AWD conversions, but not RWD. If you can accomplish it, you'd be the first.

see.... all the L4's are side mounted..... getting a RW tranny mounted to that is infact never going to happen. lol
if you want a RWD celica, your going to need a 1jz/2jz or V6 swap

I could be wrong but im 98% sure there is not a manufactured tranny that will bolt up to Any S or A series toyota engine that will product a rear wheel linkage aside from stuff from the 80's tercel and corolla. ONLY awd, and i dont believe the 154e (3s-gte awd tranny) bolts up to the 4a

the amount of time and effort to make an I6 or V6 fit, would be unbareably costly.

BUY A GT-FOUR! much cheaper

In theory, you could make it awd, and then remove the awd sensor.. and something else, dont remember.... but i know nothing.

I thought about making it awd and removing the sensor, or making it making the mods to send more of the total power to the rear wheels. I'd say 20/80 to the rear wheels. I have to see what setup the GT4 uses. I don't thinks it's close to 20/80 though.

GT4 is 50/50 split. There is no sensor in the centre diff to remove and make it RWD

why not take the engine/tranny/drivetrain from a Toyota RS200 Altezza? (3S-GE RWD and 205hp N/A) and use those parts for rwd? i know thats what they did for the drift tC. i know its s super long shot but i am guessing thats the best way of going about it

First off - IDK who said it above but there most definetely IS a tranny availble for RWD 4A-G(x)x engines - it's the one used on mid 80's Corollas. You would use the tranny and rear diff from an AE86 Rolla basically. The axles would all be custom length and you'd need all custom mounting for the engine and rear subframe. Then, as Playr has pointed out before, you'd need a steering rack that somehow fit around the motor now mounted longitudinally in a car that was designed for FWD/AWD - not gonna be easy at all. Certainly not worth the effort since what you would end up with is a frankenstein car that was basically a heavy AE86 without the huge benefit of the nearly equal front to rear weight differential.
Just buy a Rolla and be done with it [It's not like they even cost very much].

Secondly - someone was telling you to look at e153 or some such other nonsense - not gonna work. That's a FWD/MR tranny for an S Series motor. If you still intend to keep it A Series that tranny is useless to you.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a Supra body and do a custom Celica front end conversion to it? That would skip all the trouble of custom mounting and making custom mechanical parts, and it would just be body work.

anyways its going to cost 3 times more than its worth (around est. $10,000)i looked into with already having the 7agte in my car and came to the conclusion to just pull the motor and put it in an old corolla

i liked the mid/rear engine idea. it would take a ridiculous amount of work including custom mount setup, front mounted gas tank, and dozens of other unforseen problems but if someone wants to fork over the cash i'd be more than happy to give it a try...


actually, once i finish my swap and find a new DD..... hrm....

*above post is wrong*

a) not all I4 motors made by toyota where transverse mounted. The RS200 Altezza beams, 1st gen celica are both longitude mounted motors.

b) Since there are long. mounted I4 motors that MUST mean there are RWD transmissions for them wink.gif
(2S bellhousing + W58 supra trans) or the trans from the 3sge BEAMS BLACKTOP

c) you don't need a 6 cylinder motor to go RWD (see point a)
c1) the V6 swap has been done several times and its just as affordable as a 3sgte swap


onto my next points

Hardtarget - 5sgte - RWD - tube frame

RWD requires a completely custom steering rack and k-frame as the OEM ones will not fit with a longitude mounted motor.

Ah, I see! I was checking out the motor from the 1 gen celi or the corolla. The are mounted longitudinal.

playr158, what about a mid/rear engine swap...? pretty sure with a hatchback there's enough room, you'd need to fab a new firewall, move the gastank (fuel cell up front?) and probably use gt4 rear suspension pieces but i'm thinking its possible...

There probably is enough room, but like you said a new firewall to seal the front of the car off from the rear would be needed.

and the GT4 rear would not work. The most probable way of doing a mid engine swap is taking the entire front suspension/kframe/control arms ect. and fabricating them to the rear.

this is how the honda peeps do it.

Isn't there a guy on here or on youtube that has a twin engine 6th gen celica. One in the front and one in the back. I think it's putting out like 600whp. I'd like to see how he did that.
