Story: Just replaced my 5sfe (lost compression in cyl. 1) with another one that supposedly has 100k on it.
Rebuilt entire top end. Brand new plugs, wires. All sensors transferred from old motor in working condition.

Symptoms:
Car won't idle steadily...very rough miss.
Has no power. Absolutely no bottom end.
When I am cruising at high RPM's and press the clutch, the engine stalls.
Also stalls every time I come to a stop sign or try to slow down and turn in somewhere.

Any ideas?
I've checked grounds, plugs, wires, timing, vacuums, sensors. Dizzy worked on old motor. I'm flopping like a fish here.
I haven't gotten any CEL's. Haven't had a chance to test compression just yet either.
Please tell me the bottom end of this motor is not bad too. That will make 3 bad bottom end 5sfe's for me if it is. And I will probably drop a stick of dynamite in the car if that's the case.

laugh.gif +1... On the serious side I would get a logger and see if you are throwing any codes. The car stalling when clutch is pushed in sounds like your thrust bearings.

sounds like one the following

vac lines, missplaced
vsv's hooked up incorrectly (did that on my 91stx car ran like ass)
mechanical timing is off ( the notches for the cam gear and crank gear are not alighned right)
distributor is shot
clogged injectors

hopes this helps

or your distributor sequence is wrong, check how your wires plug into your distributor.

i had that issue. i was flopping like a fish, too. 5S injectors are a bitch to get to though.

it could also be valve timing.

what made me look into the injectors wa the fact i had an obvious miss at idle, so i unplugged each plug wire to see what cyl it was, and each cyl i unplugged made it worse. so it wasn't a actual misfire, it was a huge reduction of power/efficiency in the whole engine. so out of curiosity i swaped my injector wires around and BAM, engine ran great

OK. Ruled out a few things.

Compression is good in all 4 cylinders.
Hooked up the smoke machine to vacuum system- no leaks.
Checked the timing and it's perfect.
Garage told me our vacuum piping is all in the correct places.
EGR not stuck open.
Plugs and wires all good.
Dizzy and wires all good.
Injectors worked great on last motor, and all connected correctly to my knowledge. Plugs just go straight across the wiring harness, 1 2 3 4, and match perfectly with where their respective injectors are at.

I'm not getting a CEL yet. I've driven it for about 30 miles. Just poor performance, occasional stalling when I press the clutch to release rpms on the engine, and rough idle.

Almost has to be a sensor of some type eh? But as I said, they all worked on the old motor. It actually ran better than this one, and it was only holding about 60 lbs. of compression in cylinder 1.

Hit me.

This would have been my guess too...one of the cams is a tooth out????

fuel filter clogged? a fuel line clogged? stale gasoline? how long was the gasoline in your tank before using it.

The gas was sitting in it for about a 1 1/2 months. That could be the culprit actually...if not, I'm sure it doesn't help.

OK the CEL came on finally. It gave me a cylinder 4 misfire code.
Compression, Plugs, Wires, Injectors, All Good.
Got any other ideas that could cause just one cylinder to misfire?
It has constant spark coming from the dizzy too.
Struggling here...

dollars to donuts you have the plug wires in the wrong order on the distributor cap, or maybe one's not plugged in tightly enough on the cap

I had almost the exact same problem, VERY similar to your symptoms, and it turned out I'd had a wire come loose off my distributor cap when my battery slid off the tray. Took me 3 days to figure it out!

Figured it out.

There was no vacuum going to the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Therefore it was stuck on at maximum pressure, pumping as much fuel as the fuel pump could throw at it constantly.
Hose was connected, but no vacuum coming from the intake.
We just stole vacuum from a different spot with a splice, and it runs like a charm.
I believe the reason there's no vacuum has something to do with changing the throttlebody.
Apparently there are two different types, which might use a different gasket, or be proprietary to their respective intakes.
I know we switched it, btu we did not switch intakes as well. Can anyone shine some light on that subject???

I think this was done for different years, maybe the placement of the MAP sensor being changed too.

Anyways, eventually I will check it. But it runs great now that it has vacuum...
