did it originally have a 7a motor in it? Or was it a 5s? I'm pretty sure the motor mounts are completely different between the two engines. I've heard the frames are different, but I've never seen it for myself.

the vin reads the 7afe with egr so im assuming it had a 7afe in it before

i appreciate that. but i found out that a 4afe and a 7afe have the same part number for the gasket set meaning that a 4afe turbo manifold will work on my 7afe motor, and a t25 turbo will work. correct me if im wrong. i called auto zone and got the part numbers and compared them and they indeed are tha same. now my other concerns. i have a mandrel pipe bender that my dad got for at his shop so we are going to fabricate all my piping. but him and i are going to tig weld the pipes together and not use the sleeves to put them together. is this bad? and all i really need to get is that manifold, the intercooler, the oil line for the sending and returning, but one other thing what if the turbo is water cooled on top of oil cooled? is that only if the turbo has ball bearings?

If its water cooled u have to run coolant lines and idk how that would be.What piping are u talking about?Intercooler piping that ur gonna bend and fab?Welding the pipes together is perfectly fine to do,as long as the welds are strong....

yes the intercooler pipes. and yes i understand they have to be strong welds i really would hate to sit along side the highway cuz i did a boo boo lol. but im really curious to see if the 4afe manifold will acually fit. its not long its short soo i guess ill find out here soon.

its in teh STICKIES wink.gif "7afe maps and ect."

you have to cut the manifold's flange off (the engine side)
and weld on a 7afe flange (runner extension might be needed)
flanges available from jgstools.com/turbo

also you need to reinforce the welds on that manifold as they are know to crack and a brace (if it doesn't come with one) should be welded from flange to flange to aid in support

ha ok i got ya.. well i think ilkl stick with the 4afe manifold. would i need to put a differnt head on it, injectors, gasket, so forth? if ill be running like 8 psi? and my clutch will i need to upgrade or can i stick to my stock one? lol so many questions!!! and is and internal waste gate better to use than lets say a external bov?

I say get a 4A-GZE and turbocharge it later down the road. The 7A-FE takes too much money to run it reliably. I'm sticking with mine because it would be lost money to change engine since I've spent so much on little stuff here and there. I'm currently repairing it. Second time it breaks a piston, and it's a really small crack. The rods are fine still. I don't think they're as weak as people say they are or as they look. I've overboosted over 20 PSI recently and all pistons have survived and the rods are fine. The broken piston didn't break more than what it was, and I'm sure it broke because of detonation and not boost level.

well what makes that motor so much more special. i was on a corolla foruma nd they were all about changing to a 7afe? and to my knowlege the 4agze is a 1.6 ltr out of a corolla? why is this one better? doe sit have better compression and with stand more intense(MOMENTS)? or something? would it use the same ecu and use the same wiring harness as the 7afe?

The 4A-GZE is a performance-oriented engine. It's stronger, even if it has less torque than a turbocharged 7A-FE. No, ECU and wiring needs to be changed. Totally different engines other than being in the same family and bolting right up to the ST's engine bay.

You can look for a AW11 4A-GZE (MKI MR2) or get a JDM AE101 4A-GZE which is newer, distributorless ignition system, etc.

The added benefit is that the GZE comes with forged internals (because it's supercharged) so you're basically set for internals. As far as wastegate and bov, you're getting two seperate items mixed up. A wastegate controls exhaust flow to the turbo. A blow off valve redirects compressed air either into the atmosphere (VTA) or recirculates it back into the intake.
