hey everyone
this weekend i replaced my half axles. got new ones from oreillys. well when i was driving yesterday, i heard something fly out of the engine bay, and i lost all my transmission fluid. turns out my axle popped out on the passenger side. why is it that the axle wont stay in place in the transmission? could i be missing a clip? please send me anything you can that may help me diagnose this. im completely stumped. i would put pics up, but no camera. thanks all |

you mat have not put the snap ring on right, or at all. the axle may not have been put on right. it takes A LOT of force to get those halfshafts in correctly.

is the snap ring the same thing as the c-clip or circlip?

you mat have not put the snap ring on right, or at all. the axle may not have been put on right. it takes A LOT of force to get those halfshafts in correctly. It just takes one good push from the other side of the axle, usually these rebuilt axles come with everything new / replaced such as the snap ring and a new axle nut. I'm guessing you didn't push it in hard enough. |

Just give er' the beans when putting it in. When replacing axles i usual get a a mallet and lightly tap them in to get them in there for sure.

Most axle shafts from oriellys are rebuilt. Not new. and your car may be a newer year model. after sept it goes to the next year model. check the under hood decal for correct year, not the door. it will say " this vehicle conforms to us/ california emissions standards for 19xx vehicles." if you have a problem like that repeatedly. you need to contact the franchise owner or representative. ( i worked there) thats the only way to get them to take care of this for you (tow bill, fluids, expenses lost or out of pocket, etc...
the dealer part will cost more, but be less hassle. * Also does anyone know if the bolts need to be torqued? |

ok so after 3 axles, i figured something must be wrong w/my car, even tho previously this never happened. after getting in contact with AIT, the manufacturer or the axles oreillys had, it turns out that every axle i've been getting is 1/2 inch too short, which explains the bearing breaking every single time. just figured i might let you guys know in case you go to oreillys for axles.

Wow thats terrible, I had a similar problem recently with a Pep Boys axle, it was the passengers side as well. I took it out of the box and I swear they just put new boots on an axle with 100k+ miles on it and spray painted it silver =( The retainer bearing had more play than my old one with 190k and under the spray paint there was tons of old hardened grease. That axle was supposedly "rebuilt" so I returned it and went with a new one from another parts house. Everyone would rather spend $50 on an axle, so I guess there is a high demand for the rebuilt ones, you get what you pay for though. |

the passanger side isnt held in with a clip.
its the carrier bracket that holds the axle in place. sounds like theyve been giving you 5th gen axles. had it happen to my cousin a while back with a local place. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

this wouldn't happen to be a 3s-gte swap with the e-153 transmission, would it? is the FIRST axle that broke an OEM celica axle (orrigionally on the car)?
