Hi guys,

just finished putting together a mates GT4... when we fired it up it was in neutral and it ran OK, but all of a sudden there is gearbox oil all over the top of the box and in a huge puddle on the ground.

the gearbox had just been refilled, it was filled from the top, but only up to the filler hole on the side (as per the manual) any ideas?

Isn't there an overflow hole up top? I know there is one on the rear diff.

Did you fill the gearbox with the front end jacked up?

yeah it was filled with the front end of the car on jack stands.

there is an overflow hole on the top, but it does not look like it came from there.

Well same thing happened to my alltrac. It was just a little puddle near the overflow hole. No big deal for me, because I think I put in a little over the required 5.1 quarts because the car was jack up I couldn't get an accurate reading on the fill job.

yeah I'm actually wondering if maybe the fill bolt just wasn't put in or something simple like that, for there to be oil all over the top of the transmission, that's an odd place for it to leak from otherwise, unless it's just not mounted properly to the block, but even then... can that happen? It wouldn't have even started if it wasn't bolted up properly.

If the transaxle wasn't bolted up to the block properly it would have a uber hard time to turn over. Believe me, I would know. Did you smell it? Was it in fact gear lube? Ifs its on top it can't possibly be the axle seals. Unless you removed the transfercase and never sealed it up with rtv gasket maker.
