i have read through everything turnip has done in his thread to try to figure out why my beams wont start. i just so happen to own a 94gt myself. i have tested spark, fuel pump, etc. but it seems like the fuel pump doesnt get a signal to pump gas in. i have also noticed that when i do get it to sputter the rpm gauge doesnt move. and also that my radio doesnt turn on anymore. any help/advice is very appreciated

How do I pull the codes? And where would I look them up?

using the diagnostic box in the engine bay, put one end of a wire in pin tc and ground the other end. turn the key to the on position and the check engine light on the dash should blink out the code(s). the codes will be the same as any other usdm obd1 vehicle.

if you get no codes that means it is not anything electrical, i.e. a sensor or bad connection or no signal to something. in that case if you believe its something fuel related, check that the fuel pump is actually working. Listen for it or pull the feed line off the bracket on top of the tank and see if fuel spits out of it when you crank it. I had a problem with our beams when it just died on me while I was driving to work. The fuel pump did work, but the fuel trickled out, not enough pressure to start the car. I pulled out the pump and it was aftermarket so I replaced it with a used oem pump and started the car.

went to garage to test a couple of more things out, it looks like the coils are not sparking after i powered the fuel pump directly. the injectors seem to be working as well. something is stopping the signal from turning the fuel pump on and sparking the car. could my ecu be bad? i will try running engine codes next tomorrow. i was also thinking it could be the fuel pump relays might be messed up but i dont know where there located but im pretty sure its in the dash somewhere.

ok, my error was, under the intake there are a lot of grounds that are for the coils, i did not tight those, my car started after that, the other is if you do not bridge the 14 and 17 wires in the main plug.

pull the codes and see what. I hope is not the ecu. recheck all wiring. its always something simple

usually something simple smile.gif

did you move the clutch start switch wire to the correct plug and pin ?

also, the stock rpm gauge won't work witht he beams, either use a beams dial or use a signal adapter.

I agree. I believe that was the exact symptoms I was having when i tried the key the first time. Thanks again Batman for the help.

Should be starting a new thread shortly as I am about to start project #2. Picking up the donor chassis on Thursday.

Yeah I moved the Clutch Start wire and I bridged 4 and 17 from the top of ea1. Is it suppose to be 14 and 17? Tried to check codes but don't get a check engine light, started checking the ecu for power and I finally got a check engine light but power to it was very low

did you modify the wiring harness in any other way that can compromise a short?

I remember in the mr2 forums that you can test resistance to see if they work.

did you check all fuses, inside and outside,

are you absolutely sure it was wires 14 and 17, at first i did not count them right. (and you probably did them right, but good to double check)

Have you tried starting the car with starter fluid, do you have fresh gas, or is it stale.

Check compression. (hopefully its ok)

If the engine was ok, no high mileage, i would say wiring. Make sure not short.

check over mr2 for coil testing.

crank angle sensor?

i didnt even extend the harness. all fuses checked and look good. do you have a picture of what you bridged? have used starter fluid and it goes but since there is no spark or fuel getting in there it wont stay on. I am not very good with all this electrical stuff....

The bridge on EA1 is from pin 4 to pin 17. Mine would turn over and had spark, all the same symptoms you have described. After I tied the two pins together, the engine fired up first try.
Going on 5 years now and still purrs like a kitten.....er.... tiger.
