its actually a 14 gal tank with a 2 gal reserve... you would have to be reading past E before it breaks into the reserve... which i doubt happened

All the stuff about fuel economy at cruising speed is irrelevant to the EGR system. Learn how it works before you go off on a tangent.

the reason I was saying that. was becuase I have the original paper that you see on the inside of the car that staes the gas mileage and it says 27 street and 34 mph highway on average. but ok thx for clearing that up. my mechanic said the egr was failing on the intake side. that shouldnt make my exhaust sound weird when I turn it on right?

Is this the same process for the 7afe?

I believe the EGR is the issue with my vehicle, so since it won't hurt anything removing it, figured what hell, no inspections here, bye bye EGR.

Just wanted to confirm on the wires to jump, because there are 2 connectors coming from the EGR. One grey 2 pin, and one orange 2 pin...the grey has a black weave wrapping which looks like heat protection, then splits into 2 wires to go into connector. They both connect in the same area, right behind the intake manifold. Grey is on top, and Orange is on the side. The other connector with in that harness is the o2 sensor for the downpipe, which i already have disconnected.

That raises a question for me - and it sounds like you can answer it/clear it up. I thought the EGR only actually came on at cruising speed (i.e. about 50 mph). So my question is, how would a faulty EGR affect stop-and-go driving if it doesn't activate until you hit 50?

Reason I ask is that I've been fighting with my friend's EGR on his Prizm (4AFE). We had to get it through DEQ, and after replacing the EGR w/no luck on the CEL, I finally just took it to a parts store and had the CEL reset, at which point we drove it to DEQ (about 6 miles) and kept it under 40 mph so the EGR wouldn't trigger and the CEL code would stay clear long enough to get it through DEQ. (Illegal, I know. Desperate measures, ya know...)

In his particular case, the CEL or bad EGR hasn't affected "performance" or gas mileage at all. I know on other cars though, a CEL would throw it into "safe mode" and make the car run like crap and get horrible mpg. Does this just not really apply on our particular cars (or variations thereof)?
