sad to say, but there really isn't anything that cheap that will give you a lot of extra horses. you could upgrade to an aftermarket intake (about 3 to 5 horses), do an a/c delete (a few extra horses), and use higher octane fuel. I believe those are the cheapest routes to go. anything else will cost you a pretty penny.

first- search.
second, there is no cheap way your going to beat out a lancer or a cobalt SS, they are just factory faster, and not to mention more than likely newer. You can get an intake and exhaust, but it doesnt give you as much as you may think. Save and swap, or turbo. Either one...will Not be done cheaply

Unless he puts in 108 octane or race fuel, that doesn't matter. When you're using pump gas, the octane ratings are so close together, it really doesn't matter what you use. Unless of course you have a Lexus or a Mercedes that the factory says you must you premium. Then if you use regular, you'll be hurting your engine. But contrary to common belief, higher octane pump gas doesn't make you go faster.

Exactly. You can pump 87 or 93 but it's not going to make a difference in your low compression NA setup. Boost your car or have a high compression engine and then it matters. Otherwise you're wasting money.

OP- There's no cheap way to get extra power. Just congratulate your friends got having quick, fun cars and don't drive yours like a tool. You don't have to go fast to look good.

I know this. But back to the OP, he wanted a quick, easy, and cheap way to go fast. Boosting a car is by no means a quick, easy, and cheap process. So like I said, it doesn't matter the octane he uses.

I did hear that if you run your car on higher octane (or toss it in every once in a while), that it is better for the engine in some ways (not to get off topic). But thanks for letting me know it doesn't do anything unless you have a turbo

Higher octane gas is less prone to pre-detonation aka knock. There really is no way to get huge power gains. I think what you could do though is advance your timing and you might net a few ponies doing that. Also a well set-up CAI with a full exhaust job would net you a bit of power. Then you can tune a bit using an safc if you have a logger and wideband. You couple all that with a bit of weight reduction mods and you'll be a bit quicker. When all is said and done you might gain like 15-20whp spending around $200-$400 on a good day I'm assuming. So its really up to you.

please use the search feature and read and read and read what everyone else has already covered. It's simple, you won't beat them without cheap mods. just be happy you have a nice car to drive.
I got friends with 300+ HP RSX-S turbo and they respect me for having one of the cleanest looking cars around. tongue.gif

What he said, You boost the 5s prob like 230-300ish. You swap: 250 just by swapping, then some basic bolt ons and boost controller your looking at 300+.

If they have Turbo Cobalt SS's and Evo Lancers you will NEVER be able to keep up without a turbo, I had a 2009 Cobalt SS Turbo and it was an STI/EVO eater. BEST option lol get a GT-4 biggrin.gif
