HI all, im new here but have been surfing the forum for a long while now. anyways, I have a 1994 celica ST manual tran, 148,xxx miles on it. I have an issue when driving around 70-80 and above on the freeway. my steering wheel starts shaking around 70 and gets pretty bad aroun 80 and above is terrible. below 70 it is smooth and perfect.

I have had an alignment done, rotated tires, balanced wheels, and checked all suspension components and to the best of my knowledge all is good. Does anyone know what may cause this? It really bothers me and I would like my car to drive smooth at highway speeds.

Thanks in advance for all your knowledge!!!

first check how much thread if left on your tires, if that's good and thread wear looks even, get your tires balanced again at a different place.

Tires all have good amount of tread and good treadwear, I had the wheels balanced two different times actually ( by the same place) they did a ****ty job the first time and i noticed one was loose so had it redone. I will bring it somewhere else and try that although i don't believe it will help at all..

Thank you for your response though, if anyone else has any ideas please let me know.

It's probably your tires. I had BFGoodrich ones on my car (came with the car). They had eh tread but I had no money to replace them. Anything about 70 or so, the wheel would shake. Then I replaced all my wheels with Falken 512's and shaking is no more. My old tires looked like they were wearing pretty evenly, but apparently that wasn't the case

could be a wheel bering.. mine does the same thing and i was told the wheel bering was either shot or it had came out of place and needed to be looked at.

Lift the car up and tilt the wheel with your hands up and down and left and right. If they move drastically then it's your wheel bearing.

Otherwise it's a wise choice while you're under the car to take a look at your tie rod. See if they move, because I've heard stories of how everything is fine under 50 or so mph and then when they go into higher speed the car starts shaking, same scenario here.

Also make sure your wheels are on tight and not missing any lug nuts.

I will check these things out, all my lugs are on and tight. I brought it to two diff shops and had them check the front end . I was told its tight and all is well with no issues, I dont trust shops so i will check myself when i have the chance.
