Good speakers, Here's what I'm trying to achieve. Options

So I want decent bass, but I don't want to run subs... I've never liked the amount of space they take up and I don't want THAT much bass.

What I am looking to do is replace all of the speakers. All work fine and I have the GT model with the 6 speaker stereo and amp. I have a SONY XPLOD head unit that does 52x4 watts (208 total) with rear or sub selectable out. So what I want to do is put speakers in the rear that are decent on bass, use those primarily for the bass and then replace the tweeters to higher quality ones, and replace the door speakers with something to give me my mid range.

What are good brands that I can check out that wont rape me in cost, but be effective in the area's I'm looking. Does anyone here have any experience with high bass speakers that aren't subs? Could I run an 8" sub in place of a rear speaker and wire it the same as the speakers?

You can keep the Sony, but youd need to get a 4 or 2 ch amp. Sony is NOTORIOUS for exaggerating there power outputs of their amps and headunits. My recommendation is to get a set of 8" subs for the front doors and use a 2 ch amp to power them, then get a set of nice 3 way speakers for the rear, kicker,infinity,boston,kenwood are my preferred speaker brands. Your other option is to get a nice headunit and get 4 6.5" speakers (kicker has the most bass and sound clarity IMO)and that would give you a good amount of base. But your sony headunit wont be able to put out enough power to run a bassy speaker system.


The issue with having your speakers supply the highs, mids AND lows is during bass you lose the sound quality of the mids and highs as the speakers are trying to go low end bass. With a sub the speakers don't do any bass so you get excellent sound during bass.

the best thing that comes to mind for what your wanting would be to get a 4 channel amp of about 500w and get a component speaker set for front and rear. components have a crossover(enables certain frequencys to go to say tweeters and certain ones to go to woofers), woofers, and tweeters basicly a speaker but in seprate components to give better quality sound. they can run from 100-1000$ for front set and same for back set.. but cost wise you could always just get some good replacement speakers for all your speakers, then get a small 250-400w amp and run a single 8" or 10" woofer in the hatch, that would be small enough, hell some subwoofers can use very small boxes and have good sound from them. could also go with a all in one powered subwoofer and that usualy is very small and not heavy....and a lower powered amp wont give you an obscene ammount of bass but would sound good. in my 95 grand prix gtp i had i just had a single 10" subwoofer with 250w powering it and it sounded good a nice overall balance of sound. good luck! others might have better input then me i only know a little bit about car audio.

The GT-S I have came with a factory amp which the SONY is running through right now. At it's current point because of the rear selectable sub (aka I can already change my rear speakers into subs) I have enough bass to shake all of my mirrors and vibrate my house. That's with the factory speakers and the head unit at 21 volume.

It's not a cheap SONY head unit that you get at Walmart. This was one that they sold at Circuit City and was one of the first to ever offer iPod direct connect. I can control my iPod directly from the head unit. It's old, but it's clear, powerful, and never has any issues. I'm planning on upgrading to the new version of it because this one has a green faceplate and I'm doing a red interior theme.

I have a set of rockers for my rear speakers and they sound amazing. Good bass, really loud, and they'll hit every range of frequencies you can possibly imagine to throw at them.

i have the same head unit and run all 4 kenwood speakers. I am very happy with my setup but if you want more bass, i would stay away from kenwood. They have great sound quality but not enough bass and thats why i run my 15" sub along with them. My recommendation for speakers with great clarity and great bass are Polk Audio. I would have gotten them for my car but they were a bit out of my price range.

Pick up a component set for your front off of ebay with a high sensitivity (90db+) and a 6.5" driver. Throw a matching coax set in the back.
Dont spend too much, being that your factory amp really doesnt push all that much power compared to an actual aftermarket amp. You dont want to buy speakers that were made to be powered by higher wattage. Your Sony is only feeding its power into the factory amp, youre not seeing any of that 16w-18w RMS from the Sony...
After that, play with the settings on your Sony and see if you cant get some bass out of the new setup.
Im a fan of Infinity Reference and Alpine Type-S for entry level drivers, they are moderately efficient and still sound decent compared to other brands at that price point.

With a little modification you get 6x9s in the front doors. I have a pair of kenwood 6x9s in my doors ran from a pioneer avic hu and the sound is great. Just something to think about

What is the factory speaker size? Also, what are crossovers? This kit comes with 4 crossovers and 4 tweeters. Is this to power the standalone tweeters?

JL have very good speakers. That was the first mod to my car. Sound was and still is pristine after 5 years.

Factory fronts are 8" speaker mounts and the rears are 6.5" mounts. You can mod the front stock speaker mounts to hold your replacement 6.5s.

Check what I'm running off the stock amp in my profile - soundds good even two years later though for a more robust sound I think I'll be adding a small amp and shallow mount subwoofer.

I've never heard them but I'd wager they'll sound better than your old stockers. Do give us a review when you receive them.

still running my stock speakers in the doors haha the rears were replaced by the previous owner, but in all, it still sounds really good

So far, I'm impressed. They came with crossovers and tweaters too. I'm actually going to replace my OEM tweeters with these and run a pair in the rear with the crossovers. I'm also looking at decent 8" mid range speakers for the doors. Only 2 of the 4 are good... the guy ripped me off. The cone is cracked on one and the other has tares in the diaphragm around the cone... Oh well. Two are good though, so they will replace my rears.

I'll update when I install them on my day off. I've got a strut mount to replace and I'll see if I can do these too. Speakers and wiring are my favorite... I hate working on suspension lmao.

those speakers shouldn't go in the rear unless you plan on running them with the tweeters in the front which can be done but requires wiring, the speakers you have that are 6.5 inch are woofers for a component system meaning they need to be split with crossovers and tweeters. Now you can run those in the rear but would have to wire up the crossover as well along with them if you want the bass in the rear, those speakers are rated for 100w rms though you need more power, 25rms that your deck pushes out isnt close to being enough to push them
