I got hold of some beams axles recently, and im changing the boots, but they old grease is messed up,

I cannot even think to realize how to take the outer joint apart, i have cleaned it with brake fluid, but i believe its not good enough and i don't want to leave residue.

After intense hours of reading and googling, finally found the answer.

Beams axles are different than our celicas, our inner joint in the celicas are scalloped, which means that its a system of 3 bearings systems, compared to 6 bearing balls in the beams which is the same as any 3sge axles, which may explain the increase in strength for HP.

the inner joint for both sides and inclusive the intermediate shaft are shared with the celica 86 gts.

Re moving the boots are easy, just some clips and they are loose, then is the grease mess.

5sfe with 3 bearings on a hub

3sge with 6 ball bearings

The inner axle joint is disassembled by removing the retaining clip. then there is ring pin to remove the hub in both axles.
make sure you mark were everything goes.

the outer cv joint is the most difficult. tap it hard with a mallet hammer to take it out it has an inner retainer clip just like the clip in the tranny, it takes a good blow to take it out

to clean the inner joint disassemble the bearings first, then the hub then the cage..

reversal is the installation procedure, i dont have my own pics at the time, im using net pics, but i will post some later.

cheers.

I will post pics of the beams axles, procedure is the same. The shafts are actually thicker than the 5sfe.

If the axles are knocking only during full-lock turning (low speed, quick acceleration), is it probably/definitely too late for just a cleaning and repacking? Guess a cleaning and re-lubrication will most likely make it last longer, either way...

Thanks

That would depend on the amount of scoring on the race/cage/bearings.....if its something you can catch early on, then a rebuild would be a cheaper alternative.
