this just hit me on the general forums going back and forth with Bonzai.

What does Subaru do with this and where does it fit with their current lineup?

Yes, its priced above the base Impreza, but the WRX is already right at 25k and for that you get 2 more doors, AWD, and at least +60hp. from what I have heard, thats the price range that they're targeting for this.

I'm not talking about the turbo version. Yes I read up on that too about them using the same transmission/engine mounts. Of course you can stick a sti engine in their but then that defeats the whole meaning behind fast response n/a motors. Toyota/Yamaha are better at building 2 liter N/A motors than subaru is. You mentioned something about 75 more hp than a miata, ya I hope for that in a n/a trim 2.5 liter boxer engine.

And yes people will compare it too the s2000 engine. Its been on a class of its own since the year 2000. The FRS is a car 12 years newer than the S2000, so if it can't beat it then I say fail. But I guess Toyota never focused their cars directly at honda competition, even though they should. They can't let honda keep up top in the number one spot like they usually do. in the 4 cylinder engines that is.

speaking of engine swap I heard a newer 2008 sti engine into the late 90's subaru impreza sti is a heck of a car. The late 90's impreza weighs about 250 lighter than the 2003+ impreza's.

I was just basing that off of the MX-5 wiki page, and taking a second look, I think I grabbed the wrong numbers. I see hp numbers around 150-175 on there. But either way, its a little more power if they can hit the 200hp mark.

on that note, I was referring to the car as a whole, not just the engine. Toyota has all but abandoned high performance engines lately, so its probably hard for them to switch gears and focus on power when they could use that time elsewhere and just tweak a subaru engine that already mostly exists.

That engine is more than just tweaked; I have every suspicion that the only thing about it wholly Subaru are the mounting points. Everything else has been redone by Toyota/Yamaha - the head engineer said so. This thing will hit 200HP with no problem - just think of it as a newer 1ZZ with a flat setup instead of an inline.

As for slotting, this will fit in Subaru's lineup as their entry-level sports car as well - get one of these and once you're ready for something a bit larger with more power they'll gladly sell you an STi.

right, but if this is priced at 25k, what would make me buy this other than buying an impreza WRX?

Its a problem a lot of manufacturers have when they have two sports cars that slowly encroach on each other's markets. Chevy has been careful to keep the camaro well lower than the corvette so far, but toyota had this problem with the celica and corolla. as the celica fell in price and performance the celica competed directly against the corolla and they ended up scavenging sales from each other.

They just seem too close in price for it to last long.

New Miata has 177hp. At the same time mazda main engine technology lies in the rotary engines. Not the inline 4 motors.

To be honest - I don't care what Subaru does with it - if anything more than proof of concept.

25k and 200hp + potentially (Don't lock us out, Toyota) EEPROM ecu on a boxer motor = Cobb Tuning creating a custom tune with an AccessPort.

From what SOA's President said this thing will cost between what the Impreza and the Legacy cost - so theoretically, this could cost between 20k and 23k base which would make it cheaper and lighter than the WRX. Not only that, I doubt people drooling over this car are cross shopping the Rex - they target different markets really but I can see where you're coming from jimmy.

Either way, I'm truly looking forward to both versions of this car but I know I'll be buying the one that provides the best bang for the buck.

tell that to their skydrive systems comming out in the '12 mazda3's No, its not a high performance engine per say, but i think its somewhere around 160 hp and getting 40 mpg. either way, that's pretty impressive.

Also, mazda's had nothing but problems with their newest rotaries. Lots of lubrication problems. I see the rotaries as their nitche product similar to VW's old bug motors.

Personally, I'm currently shopping for a WRX or a Mazdaspeed3 right now. I need 4 doors though. But if it wasn't for that, I'd likely be in the market for this car.

the rear ends going to kill it for me. We know the front will some sort stay like the concept, but if the rear looks too scion TCish, I'll pass. If more like the LFA I'll be buying it.
