Hello folks,

I'm out on the lookout to buy a straight 6gen Toyota Celica, 96+ would be nice, but 94 is okay as well. GT/liftback trim in manual transmission only.
Expanding this search onto this forum because I'm not getting many results on autotrader and craigslist. Oregon and Washington only please.
Certainly willing to match bluebook values and pay extra for any reasonable modifications. Must be clean title.

Several for sale around here, but mainly ST, coupes and convertibles. And a GT hatch i went and checked out this past weekend only to see massive bondo work on a "clean title" car. I've been looking since last november. Has been disappointing.

Sorry to hear that. ST isn't that bad. Only real advantage to the GT is disc brakes on the rear, but can add those to a ST with a little work. I don't feel the extra 20-30 hp depending on year justifies the drop from 28-29/34-35 to 22/28-29(original EPA ratings). The GT also weighs almost 200 pounds more(ST versus GT liftbacks anyway). I have a ST and am very pleased with it. Just something you might want to consider.

Although the EPA differences are notable, I'd definitely prefer the 5s over the 7a. I only drive 5 miles to work on 3-4 day compressed shifts, so mpg isn't too big of a deal. Used to have a 95 honda civic with a factory rating of 95 hp. Must say it was definitely hard to go up hills. So I'd like to have the extra horses.

Horsepower isn't the problem there, it's torque. ST Celica makes 115 ft lb at 2,800 rpm, versus the Civic which made around 98 ft lb at 5,000 rpm. GT Celica makes 145 ft lb at 4,400 rpm. So about equal staying in the lower rpm bands with the Celica. Use mine for going up a steep mountain all the time. If you'd ever want to go and do an engine swap, the GT would be the way to go though.

That's not true. The GT is also a direct swap for 3sgte, and how many st's got power stuff? And the brakes.. and the 5s.. 20-30 HP is a lot when you only make 90-130..

He has a point there.

Majority of STs do not come with the power options, including sunroof etc etc. My ST was all power, excluding sunroof but it was obvious these were the options choosen at the dealership for more $$$..gold useless emblems and all.

After recently riding in a ST after a long time out of one, they certainlly have their pros & cons vs. the GT.

For instance, the ST has quite the better low end torgue requiring less reving to get to the power, though it does not have the extra power on demand persay. Where as the ST would lack at highway speeds in passing, the GT flys by without hesitation. The GT I believe has stiffer/thicker sway bars.

The simplicity of a swap is certainlly there with the GT, but whats an extra mount with a poly insert going to cost...less then a hundred used so the viablity to that argument only lies with the harness conversion, which most send off to get done anyway. I can't recall if the lower crossmember is the same, but last time I viewed it, appears identical.

few other tidbits like shift cables, and rad...list goes on...either or are a good platform, just require research for the end goals. Having both in hand at one point, has assisted quite a bit for the sake of dialog.

I mentioned the part about swapping in a later post. tongue.gif My ST is fully loaded. Personally could do without the power options and sunroof. I like manual windows, don't have to worry about regulators and motors going out. Having long hair I'll never use the sunroof, would arrive at my destination with a giant knot... For me I just can't justify having another 20-30 hp for that horrendous of a drop in fuel economy. If I wanted 22/28 I'd just get a 240SX and call it a day.

I have an old friend up by me selling a 94 GT on the cheap. All power options - 124K miles. I haven't looked at it yet, but I imagine its all in good shape. The clutch went out and he can't afford to fix it.

Figure $300 and change for a South Bend clutch, and you have yourself an all-option 94 Celica GT. I wouldn't pay his asking price ($3,000) but I was thinking if it was in good shape I'd buy it, fix it, then sell it.... or perhaps keep it for a Daily Driver.


(I'm in the Seattle area, BTW)
