Hi guys,
I'm about to get a Turbo Kit, and was told that i don't really need an intercooler for my 7afe. The Extreme kit that comes with it and could get it and was suggested to get a Superior Turbo Kit. Extreme Tubo Kit with intercooler,____________Superior Turbo Kit doesn't come with Intercooler. The question is would it affect any mechanical with out the intercooler? |

intercoolers are a darn near necessity for a decent turbo setup. It doesn't cost much more to include one as well.
you might get 4psi out of a turbo kit without an intercooler, but look forward to lots of detonation. get an intercooler if you plan on turboing. read stickies and faqs around here about turboing the 7afe before you buy anything |

Better to have and not need then to need and not have. Even if you bought the cheaper one. Fmic and piping is cheap

This topic should be closed. NO! You should NEVER operate a turbocharged vehicle without a method of charged air cooling.

In all fairness, there have been some non-intercooled turbo cars from the factory. Nissan S12(North American 200SX) comes to mind. There are more out there, just can't think of them at the moment.

Let me answer your reply with a question....What percentage of those vehicles are still around?

Was just stating a fact. I don't advise it, just saying cars have come from the factory that way. I imagine in most cases they've had their engines replaced with something else.

Let me answer your reply with a question....What percentage of those vehicles are still around? Let me challenge your reply. How many cars have and can operate within a safe margin without an intercooler? All can..Would it be smart to do that..NO.....My whole perspective on it though, for what its worth, is that YES you can run a turbo kit without an intercooler. Would you be getting your moneys worht/max HP while doing so. Hell no... If the company advises an intercooler, and you know (i hope you know) that an addition of an intercooler can make your setup more reliable for just an extra few hudred bucks...then why not just do it? You don't NEED a huge-ass front-mount intercooler, that's for sure. Usually bigger just means better heat dissipation which is what you really need to look for when boosting a stock, otherwise unboosted, engine.

^Very well put. Sir you are such a gentleman that now...i feel like an A$$.... To the OP, if you need any fact driven guides on intercooling then let us know...with individuals like bsamps on this forum, im sure someone can steer you in the right direction. There are alot of cheap well proven routes, you can take that will lead you down the the path of success...although as with anything, your choice to modify and engine is up to you and so are the consequences....good or bad... -------------------- (\__/)

Yes it can be done (and has been done by auto makers many many times), but like everyone else has said, it isn't advised. There are ways to "intercool" charge air without one though....for example water injection.
That said, it's going to depend on the pressure ratio you are running the compressor at, as well as where on the efficiency island a certain turbo/pressure ratio/engine combo will land you. Use this link and (if you can find one) a compressor map for the turbocharger you are thinking about running and do the math yourself. http://www.stealth316.com/2-turbotemp.htm If you do decide to intercool, I would opt for an intercooler with the least pressure loss available over running one with a higher thermal efficiency. If the pressure loss is too high, you can cause the pressure in the exhaust manifold to be high enough to cancel out the performance benefits of the I/C. Just my 2c though. Nothing will be a substitute for a proper tune though. I would rather run modest boost and no intercooler with good AFRs than just slap an I/C on a setup that isn't properly tuned. They both are not ideal, but IMO the margin of safety is higher with a good tune. |

Just one note from me... just last week I have seen turbocharged 7AFE without any intercooler. Cooling was provided by watter injection. Boost (if remember right) was set to 0.6bar.

I know theres a member that ran a water cooler(inclosed pipe with water in it that is recirculated with a pump) and it was cold all the time. |

we run a water cooled system on teh twin charged Lotus. both turbo and supercharger and the intake temps are really cool, its not until we boost over 20 psi does it get hot and the water injection kicks in

$2,800? Just do a 3S-GTE swap at that point. At least that's what I'd do anyway.

Granted superchargers dont produce as much heat as a turbo. What numbers is he running do you know? The necessity of cooling charge air between the turbo/supercharger and the engine is more a function of boost pressure than the actual method of compressing the air. Boyle's law.....PV = nRT The greater the pressure (given everything else is constant), the higher the temperature. This post has been edited by texasnick: May 10, 2012 - 7:29 PM |
