Hi, i have two Toyota celica's 6th gen sitting with me. Both are 1994. one is the ST with 1.8 motor and other is the GT-S with 2.2.
The problem is that the transmission on 2.2 is bad. So, my question is that can i put in the transmission of my 1.8 into 2.2? |

Yes, but it's a lot of work. You'll need to drill new holes for the passenger side motor mount, reuse all the 1.8 mounts, have the exhaust switched over or fabricate new exhaust, axles, shift cables, I think the master/slave cylinders might be different, and a couple of other small things I'm probably forgetting. It's very doable, especially since you have both cars and all parts readily available. It shouldn't take more than a few days.
For the amount of time and work involved, it would be quicker/easier to simply find a used S54 transmission for your GT. -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates. Thank you all for your replies. but can i just swap the 1.8ST engine and tranny within 2.2 GT-s body? Yikes! Why would you wanna turn a GT into an ST? It should be the other way around! Lol! i know it sounds stupid but as i have both the cars and gt's transmission is on its last legs, but st is holding strong to it. on the other side, the body of st is pretty much rusted and needs a lots of body work. whereas gt is in pretty good shape. |

I don't really see the point of a GT unless you engine swap it. Only some 20 hp more than the ST, and the gas mileage goes to hell. The 5S-FE gets the same mpg as a 1MZ-FE. But yeah, easiest route would be to just get another transmission.

But yeah, easiest route would be to just get another transmission. Those 20 hp are spread across the entire powerband, and torque is higher all around. It's not much on paper but the GT feels more powerful than the ST at all times. Plus, driven right, I still consistently saw 30-32 mpg out of mine. It's no 35 mpg like the ST but it was close enough for me. It's all just the feel of the car. After owning a GT for as long as I have, I couldn't go back to an ST. That's just me though, I'm weird -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates. That's just me though, I'm weird Completely agree with Richee's post, I will never purchase a ST again. Unless it is in mint, and I have a GT donor. GT feels so much more powerful. Even where the one I have has many issues, I still rather have it then my old ST with its leaky tired 7a |

Only way I'd want the GT would be to drop in a 1MZ-FE, at least then I can justify the drop in mpg. The ST is fast enough for what I need, surprised me at first to be honest. Point is, they're all better than the other 4 cylinder cars from other manufacturers.
