Hi, basically I have got the inlet housing off the turbo to clock it and in a bit of frustration I may have chipped the edges of a few of the impeller blades
So basically I'm just wondering if I could just fit a new impeller without taking the turbo out completely. So basically as long as the new wheel is balanced would I be right in saying that the entire turbo would not need re-balancing and can it be changed whilst in the car? Also before I look how do you actually change the impeller? is there a way to stop the shaft spinning and just take the nut off and put the new one back on? The wheel is balanced by removing material off the nut, so they become a set after balancing. Usually, you'd want the entire rotating assembly balanced - impeller and turbine wheels on the shaft. I guess it would depend on whether your shaft is balanced enough to where if you put a balanced impeller & nut assembly (and clock the nut correctly in relationship to the impeller) it may end up in balance. However, close enough is not quite good enough for things that spin at 150k+ rpm.
If you want to be sure, go the extra mile and take the exhaust housing off and have the CHRA balanced, or at least the turbine wheel, shaft, and impeller as a unit (the shop doing the balancing will mark the impeller position for reassembly). It sucks, but there isn't an easy way out of here. To take the impeller nut off, you have to hold the turbine wheel with a socket. The nut may be triangular, just find a socket that fits. Don't forget, the nut is tightened counter clockwise, the opposite of normal nuts. |

Yeah I definitely want to get it done properly, so its looking like there is no way to get that done without taking the shaft out, was wanting to avoid that but looks like I have no choice, I suppose I can fit my decat downpipe whilst I'm at it. The shop I'm looking at that sells the billet impeller also do full balancing so I'll be able to send the shaft off and they'll send it back all lovely and balanced with a new impeller Cheers |
