Basicly i have a bad knocking sound coming from my rear suspension, i have a gt4 but would imagine the set up is similar to sr,s and gt,s.
I was just wondering if any of you guys may have had a similar problem?
when the car is on its wheels and driving the noise is quite bad when you go over a bump, but when i put my car on a ramp at a friends garage and the wheels were just hanging when i tried to move them up and down there was no noise confused.gif also tried puttin a lever bar under the wheels and when an inch off the ground and levering suspension up to listen for noise but nothing?
I can not work out if it is the top mount that has gone or the dampers?
Any help would be appreciated

Edit: if it helps, i only hear it occasionally when i make slow but sharp turns, but somethings definately up....

just an idea check to see if the spare tire and jack are secure. Both of them can make a lot of noise if they are loose.

I have a '95 GT and I have the same problem..I took out the jack and spare tire, but that didn't solve anything. My friend suggested that it might have something to do with the struts, but I dunno. Does anyone know what it could be?

I have a feeling that it may be bad struts. I've driven a car with bad struts in back and whenever I'd hit a bump there would be this pretty bad clunk sound.

Is your suspension stock, or has it been upgraded since you've had the car?

Cheers for your ideas.
I dont think the suspension is stock as it seems a lot lower than stcok, cant see any names on the shocks though, but could have fallen off i spose?
Ah well may have to take tha car into a garage to get it fixed once and for all!

when you take it to a mechanic what your likely to hear is.

"well it appears you need to replace your rear struts...
but thats not all your strut plate is also broken...
which lets your strut wiggle all over the place creating that knocking
noise you heard. of course well get the parts through toyota, so your going to
get the shaft naturally. Then we will replace your struts and strut plates
it'll prolly cost bout $600."

if you havent found fix yet, when i lowered my car the first time i had a nastsy clunk in the rear aswell turns out there are little metel rings that go on top of the strut shaft and if i fell off when the struts were off the car that is the cause for the noise

i have the exact same problem from what you described ever since i lowered my car. does it tend to make a noise when you go around a turn pretty hard? or flex the suspesnion? i had a guy tell me that i need to replace the rear sway links b/c they'd frozen up over the years. i still need to fix them, just no money and no time. toyota told me 53 bucks a side for each link. this may be your problem. hope that helps. redface.gif
