hey i have a 94 st with an automatic transmisson. i got the car for free so i couldnt complain, but now that i have pretty much finished my speakers and headunit. i am looking to turn my car into a more fun car to drive. I want to turn the car into a manual transmisson. is it possible, and how much money would i have to spend? i'm looking to get a 5 speed, and at the same time that i do the transmission i am going to rebuild the whole engine and get it ready to turbo it since i have a c-26 (supra) turbo just sitting in my room....again i need to know how much work is gonna be involved, how much money it is gonna cost, and if it is even possible. If its going to be way too much money then i dont want to do it, i'll just sell the car and put the money into my 86 VW GTI that has a 6 speed but that also needs a lot of stuff done to it, i would rather fix up my celi then the GTI at this point, please let me know!!!!

umm well it cost me about $450 for all my parts, but that is because i have a hook up at a salvage yard. So your looking at about $600-700 for parts which is what i was quoted from TAP recycling. Then shipping for your parts, again i did not pay for shiping so probably around $100-150 depending on where you are and where the salvage yard is.
This is where the price can change, you can do it yourself like me, i am doing it in 3 weeks around April 4thish or you can pay a shop to do it. Most people have payed anywhere from $1500-2000 for parts and labor. You also need to buy a new clutch to go along with this so OEM is around $100 or Stage 1 since you are going turbo is about $265-300. a Flywheel has also been recommended so you can have the stock one redone or get a OEM $?? or a lightend for like $400. --Scott -------------------- hows it taste motha f*cka

then leave it up to a professional... this isnt something you can just follow a "how to" on and just call it a day.... This post has been edited by celicarocker: Mar 9, 2004 - 3:05 PM -------------------- |

well my dad is a mechanic at heart, has worked on all his cars done a transimission swap before and knows what to do. hes also an electrical engineer along with many other things he majored in college.
I also know what i am doing and i am mechanicly inclined. but celicarocker is right you cant just follow a how to. you need to know cars and how each part is placed and attached. For you i would recommend having someone else do it. -------------------- hows it taste motha f*cka

If you do tackle it yourself and find a donor car at a local salvage yard, make a deal with them for ALL the required parts, like shifter, console trim/boot, clutch pedal stuff under the dash, mounts/brackets etc, there are a LOT of parts to change. I'd consider selling yours and finding one with a 5-speed if you are not willing to attempt it yourself. Labor would be excessive. not to mention potential problems with the ECU thinking you have an automatic, if you dont re-do the electronics (not sure about a 94, wouldn't even try a newer model) .
On the other hand, if you know which end of a screwdriver to use, and have the time,,, its just a lot of nuts and bolts and parts to take off and put back in the proper order, doesnt require any high dollar specialty tools, I'd shop around for a 5-speed car, preferably a GT while you're at it. will probably be faster and less expensive in the long run. |
