This is a vey broad and generalized question, but im just curious if you guys think you can get 150 hp out of the GT's 5sfe (not at the wheel, btw), and if so, is it possible with 2 grand? I am still undecided if I'd rather make my suspention setup the focus of my car, or if I should make it swifter... id like to get 20 more hp out of the engine if its possible, as a realistic goal. Anyways, what are some basics that add decent power to the 5sfe? Someone mentioned to me about shaving my block down to raise compresion, but how reliable will my car be, and is that going to even add anything worthwhile without adding more problems? How about port and polishing the cylinder walls? I have no ideas really so ill let you all fire away instead...

I'm not sure if you can get it done for under $2000 but port and polish will get you quite a bit more horsepower..

150 not at the wheels so 150-135=15 horses, you can do lots of things to get 15 horses, stickers, wings, etc.
nah, but you can get a venom nitrous setup that is programmable for 1200. |

ok, so i were to try to make a n/a engine, going from a st, i could get that engine, starting with 155, and then full exhaust, full intake, new pullys... then chip it, and im sure theres more.. but i cant think of it, how much power to the wheels do you think i could get?? possibly, trying to work towards about 170-180 hp.

if your going to swap in a 5sfe for a 7afe why not just do the 3sgte? AFAIK unless your not doing the labor yourself, if your gonna go through all the trouble of a swap you mid as well do the big daddy..
also the only chips really worth getting are ones for cars with turbos that run at low PSI. Like the passat 1.8T just chipping it makes it run like 14.1's, its crazy. I dont know if that figure of 155 is at the wheels or crank.. at the wheels thats something i might look in to.. also you could see how much you could find a 3sge (thats the N/A 3sgte right?) it appears as if it would be the same amount of labor putting that 5sfe and a 3sge is gonna be like 180bhp am I right? Theres so many options, to me, I dont really want an OMFG BLOW YOU AWAY fast car, so I will probably never do the 3sgte swap. But it would be nice to have an engine that can back up the hard ass looks of the celi. I want something that is a reliable daily driver but also packs a little punch, so therefore Im considering that 5sfe with some bolt ons or the 3sge, but I kind of want to stay away from turbochargers and supercharges as those start to mess with reliability issues... |

You don't have to mess with the block. Shaving the deck will increase compression slightly, but will also slightly reduce displacement. It'll be better to shave the head. I personally have faith in the stock internals of toyota blocks... so I wouldn't even bother modifying things there unless I wanna go really big power. As for the cylinder walls... umm... I don't know exactly how you'd be able to 'port' them. I believe you have that confused with port & polish head. Anyways... getting an additional 20hp out of the 5SFE isn't that hard with 2 grand. To make a rough list: webcam regrinds (~ $400-500) Port, Polished, and milled head (~ $500-600 depending on shop... might be even less) Basic Bolt-ons, intake, header, exhaust, Under Drive Pulley, etc... (~ $500-600) With that... even crappily tuned... will put you well over 150 horses at the crank. My opinion on building the 5SFE... well... it has a very tall stroke (92 mm if I remember correctly) which hurts its n/a buildability the most... but by the time you reach that point (meaning revving to hit the max power)... you'll be pushing a lot more than 150 hp. Currently... it's not easy at all to make a high-powered n/a 4 cylinder with a lot of low-end torque (meaning under 4000 rpms). A platform such as the 7AFE would be a lot better to build n/a because of the block design. The 5SFE would be the better for forced induction because of its displacement... That's my opinion... what are webcam regrinds?
ok- right now, aside from the manditory head gasket replacement, Im thinking port polish head, new exaust, and intake... im not in need of tons of extra power- i just want a little extra omph. Does this sound decent? Or am I neglecting somthing that also needs to be covered? http://www.webcamshafts.com/toyota-auto.html A bit more expensive than I remembered. Either way, they reweld your core (meaning stock cams) and regrind them. You can even do a custom profile... If you just want a little more power... just do the basic bolt-on modifications. Head mods are expensive, and can get pretty extreme. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"
