HI,

I currently own a rev 3 mr2 turbo and am seriously considering the purchase of a celica gt4 (1997 model). jsut wondering how much more expensive the celica is to run and maintain than the mr2. i know they have the same engine but the celica is heavier and 4wd. i use the car to commute and i dont want it to cost me lot on Petrol.

Any views?

Well the GT4 is heavier and it will cost more on gas b/c of that fact. but i think the GT4 is sooooo much better looking and worth the extra cost, but thats me.

Furthermore, I think the GT4 will save you some money at the mechanic because the work can be done much easier. Just ask anyone with a MR2 what effort is required just to change a flat battery.

but asked a GT4 owner who will getting the clutch out / in! frown.gif

in my opinion the MR2 SW20 is still the best looking car toyota ever build. and with the trubo engine it has great potential on further HP upgrades.

finally the specific weight difference is about 300 kg!!!

on the other hand - the GT4 has a 4WD which helps on traction, but lose on topspeed...

nevertheless - an alternative solution will be buying both cars smile.gif

i get around 300 per tank if thats any use and i drive like im a loon!
depends how u commute, do you take the motorway or b roads?

From what people say, it's much harder to do a clutch job on an MR2. Is replacing a clutch on a GT-FOUR much different than an ST202, ST204, etc? I'm curious. Oh yeah, my brother owns an MR2.

Aye? I dont think so mate. Try 100kg at the most. The ST205 tips the scales at 1380kg, the MR2 is around 1280ish

Oh and it is alot harder to do a clutch in a GT-4, because the whole engine has to come out first(you cant just drop the gearbox out from the bottom)

well my car is about 1540 kg incl. 1/2" fuel and drivers weight 82 kg.

I have an MR2 and when I sell it Im probably going with a Celica. MR-2s are awesome but doing your own work on them is a handful, theres no room to do anything anywhere! Plus god forbid you have more then one passenger someone will be staying behind, Its just more practical to have a celica. But dont get me wrong the MR2 has plenty of space and what not.

Thats not that much over what i said if you take your weight and the weight of the fuel(around 35kg) out of the equation. My car weighed in at 1500kg with me (90kg) and just under a quarter of a tank(15kg-ish) in it.

This being a Celica Forum the scale will always be on the GT4 side. The MR2 is ofcourse a very nice car. I consider it a "brother" of the Celi as they are both Toyotas and have the same engine (3SGTE)
The drawback of the 2 seats is a large one, but the rear drive, weight, option for removable top, etc make up the difference. I wouldn't mind having the MR2 in my garage aswell.

As for weight, i had a serious problem registering my car due to weight. The exact weight on low fuel (empty actualy) was 1420 kg (no driver). Toyota has it at 1380 but my car has heavy 17s wheels and a sunroof.

Yeah 1400kg does rob the car of a better power to weight ratio and thats
with the aluminium hood, but some of us want to keep our air conditioning/ sunroofs, electric windows. I think they even reduced the fuel tank capacity on the GT4 as a weight saving attempt?.

upps my fault - i was thinking of the new MR2s weight (1085 kg). you are right 1250 kg is the weight of the old MR2 SW20... smile.gif

damn - so what makes the SW20 so heavy???

I like both of them....legendary cars.....but....i dont think that i could survive without the 4WD!!!!!!Its a way of life for me,hmmmmm hard to make a choice but go for the GT-4,the car its a factory beast:)

ok have you ever seen and MR2???? it takes about 3 seconds all you have to do is remove the spare tire in front of it and BAM there it is..but seeing how i own both i can give you an honest opnion the GT4 is a much more stable car. handling is a lo more netural were at the MR2 is prone to oversteer. but the MR2 is faster because of it being about 1000lbs lighter with the same motor. but either one you have they are amazingly fun cars i wouldn't get rid of either of them

Do you have a special carbon fiber shell or something?

Its about 250lb at the very most
