First, has any one done this, or do they just go right to the 3s-gte?? also, gt tranny will bolt right up, but i was told, or read that it wont handle that much power?? its only 177 hp, an 150 trq? is that to the wheel or crank? also what else would i need besides gt engine mounts?? Thanks
also does any one know where else, i could locate, a harness an comp?? This post has been edited by Digndoug: Apr 12, 2004 - 2:38 PM |

try and find a ssII or ssIII clip. You will be able to use the tranny that comes with it...which is better than the GT Tranny, and it will include almost everything required for the swap

Im kinda suprised that not that many people do or have done, or loo into the 3s-ge swap. Yeah its less power, an its a turbo, so you loose the cool solunds, bvut really its a great engine, also more reliable, an should be a lot cheaper then the 3s-gte swap. I mean your cutting out the turbo, intercooler, all the piping, also timers an blv an yeah... makes more sence to me.

It's not necesarily cheaper... in fact... it might be more expensive. As far as the swap goes... it's not very different from the 3SGTE swap. It'll be a bit easier, cause you'll have to source less parts, conisdering you can use the exsiting tranny (if it came with one) and motor mounts on an AT chassi... etc... but the clips are not easy to get. I talked to Jarco last year and they said they *might* be able to find me a front cut from an ST202... but they also said, they've never dealt with that chassi, so it's not certain... and if they could get it, it'll be expensive, around 4,000 or more. I also asked Venus auto about that, and they simply said, they can't get an entire clip either. It's not a high demand cut, so it'll be hard to find a car in Japan, or elsewhere even... but the Venus guys did say they could probably get the longblock and tranny with a partial harness and ECU for a fair price. All in all... it's not a matter of whether it's a good engine or anything... it's supply and demand. Toyota import tuner people usually take the easy way out and just go with a well documented swap, like a 3SGTE, which has more power potential anyways... instead of taking a weaker, non-turboed motor such as the 3SGE. I'd personally go n/a with the 3SGE over the 3SGTE any day in a FWD platform... but that's just me. As far as the Beams guy on Celica.net... he got his cut from a JDM importer in Canada. I believe it may have been one of the 2 Beams motors that were listed on eBay a while ago. Anyways.... the Beams is a completely different animal in terms of wiring. It's completely different from all of the other versions, and IMO... that guy will probably give up before he even gets close to figuring out all of those wires (repinned ECU connectors, DLI wiring set-up, VVTi wiring set-up, just to name a few custom jobs to be handled)... unless he's really dedicated and smart, or he has a VERY VERY RARE wiring manuals for the Beams 3SGE. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I dont think the mounts just bolt in... They would need to be rewelded in.

If you buy a front clip... then no. 3SGE motor mounts are the same as GT motor mounts. Yes if you buy just the motor... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

ok, a few other questions, that i just wanna make sure about. ok first .. The gt tranny will work, an im gunna be going crazy with power, so no need for anything for alot of power. I was thinking about getting a limited slip, so then i would just use a gt lsd, correct? also for like clutch gt right. OK, now for a tune up an ex... sence the 3s-an 3s-gte are the same block, i could use parts from say autozone, that are made for the 3s-gte right, or no. like oil filter, belts an stuff.. Thanks for any info

Might be different between the two... cause turbo + piping might mean the placement of some accesories are different... however, accesories should all be similar if not the same. Anyways... use the 4th Gen's parts. The 4th gen (86-89) Celica GT-S's came with a variant of the 3SGE... that and later models should have the same belts and accesories... As for the tranny... It should hold... but why use that when you can have a stronger, better geared 3SGE tranny? As for LSD and clutches... the 3SGE flywheels might have been of a different size of the 5SFE... so I'm not sure if a clutch is interchangeable. As for LSD... if you want that... it'll be either aftermarket... or a stock LSD tranny that came on some of the 93+ MR2 turbos, and some JDM Celica SS2's and SS3's... As for crazy power... you're mistaken if you're trying to make this some sort of high horsepower/torque drag racing engine. It won't make a whole lot of power w/o a LOT of serious modifications... and with an n/a platform... there will be sacrifices. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

Well this discussion is really difficult to follow, so lets sum it up a bit.
1. The 3S-GE engine is more powerful (170ish bhp) but, that kind of power is not really insane as described by someone. 2. The 3SGE swap makes a lot of sense and the engine is very- but very- reliable. My Curren never gave me any probs in the 5 years of abuse that i have it. (oh and its a JDM, so it was abused for 3 years before i got it with 100k km on the clock) 3. The engine block is the same. My advice: get the clip so you have everything. As for clips, you can get them easily but since the engine is not high power it doesn't make any sense in importing such clips in the states but there are millions of used or damaged 6gCelis around the world especially in NZ and Australia. The problem that could arise is with emmissions. |

hey, for this swap, ok, im guessing my fuel pump is not going to work, iv heard of using the supra fuel pump?? is that what i need, and will it fit, and if there is anything else that i may have forgot. also dont the gt mounts just fit right in?? someone said welding, is that the case or what?? Thanks
also sorry for bringing this thread back up, but it made more sence then starting a new one... |

there's no reason why the stock fuel pump wouldn't work. It should be ok for this engine... but if you want to play it safe... then a slightly upgraded fuel pump is fine. A Supra fuel pump is a little beyond a slight upgrade... but whatever works for you. As for the mounts... I believe there may be issues with one mount on the driver or passenger side. I forget which it is (probably the lower one on the driver-side on the tranny) but welding it is the easy way out. You can drill/tap and bolt it down, etc... all sorts of techniques for that. Theere should be pre-drilled is not pre-marked places for S series mounts... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

With the GT... yeah... but there will be modifications needed to the wiring harness... if not re-pin the harness/ECU plugs completely... so you might need a bit more than just the ecu and engine. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"
