Where can I get the plug for the stereo? I wonder if I would have more of an advantage going around it. Lay power wire and thicker speaker wire myself. Anyways, do they make a plug?

if your talking about the addapter.. you can get one at any autoparts store ... or electrioics store that has car audio stuff... or ebay i saw a few on there last week

wiring harness?
if you have the stock 6 or 8 speaker premium sound, you will need to bypass the stock amp (easies way to tell this is 8 speaker has tweeters next to the mirrors, mids by the door handle, and woofers by your leg, 6 speaker has just tweeters in the mirrors, speakers by your legs, and the back) the stock amp 1 (found in the 6 and 8 speaker systems) is found under the heater controls. stock amp 2 is under your drivers seat It will sound better if you run all of your own wire, including power and ground, and you will know what wires to check if there is a problem. |

If you have the 8 speaker system, you have a few options
1) Use the existing amps. Metra makes a wiring harness that plugs into the amp. Part number is 70-8112. This lets you use all 8 speakers without buying a new amp and it is easy to install. Just replace the headunit. The amps expect line-level audio, so you may need to get a converter (do they make speaker-to-linelevel converters?). As a test, I have successfully used this Metra connector and gotten a Discman hooked up to the existing 8 speakers. Sounded great. Search the board for Metra for more info on using this harness. You will likely have to purchase it from a car audio retailer. 2) Bypass the existing amp but use the existing wiring. There is a blue connector under the stock amp. This connector goes to existing speakers. Search the board for Install Doctor, they have PDF tutorial with pictures. I believe you use the generic 89-99 Toyota wiring harness that you can buy at WalMart. I have read this won't drive all 8 speakers. Which is probably true, since it is unlikely the speakers are all 8 ohm. Anyone know more? 3) Bypass the existing amp and wiring. Run you own wire to the speakers. The difficulty is since there are 8 speakers, I believe they are all 4 ohm (anyone know for sure?) so you need a 8 channel amp. Or you need a 4 channel amp that is 2 ohm stable and wire pairs of speakers in parallel. Anyone have more information on the factory amp and wiring? What is the ohm rating on the stock speakers? |

Excellent post. If you have the 8 speaker setup just get the Metra harness like i used. You can buy it here for a pretty good price unless you have the means to buy it locally- Metra harness- 70-8112 It depends on your goals. If you feel the need to amplify the speakers with an aftermarket amp or you want to upgrade to high wattage aftermarket speakers, than bypassing the stock amps may be appropriate. I'm very confident however that the stock amps would handle aftermarket speakers extremely well. If you have a 4 or 6 speaker setup than you could just use the wiring harness that you can get from any Circuit City or Best Buy. As for the OHM ratings of the speakers, im pretty sure they're all 4 OHMs, but dont hold me to it. I had Circuit City test mine when i thought i needed an aftermarket amp for my 8 speakers, and they dont seem to nkow much about that sort of thing.

umm, actually pluging it straight into the Blue connecter would power all 6 or 8 speakers. The amp dosnt have extra lines going out from it, all it does is take the connection from the radio, then amplify it, then runs it through that same blue harness. So if your stereo has an amp built in (almost every single one does) just use that one, and use the toyota adapter and plug the radio straight into the toyota radio harness.

Im not too sure if i understand what youre reccomending to do here. You might be able to get away with powering the 6 speaker system with an aftermarket headunit if thats what youre saying, but powering the 8 speaker system using the headunit's internal 4 channel amp wouldnt be too smart. That could fry your headunit and cause it to overheat frequently, blow a fuse, or just dramaticly reduce the OHM's at each speaker and reduce your volume output alot.
