I attempted to do this to mine today, and failed miserably. frown.gif

First off, I forgot to paint the area where you can control fan speed. Also, I painted the light reflectors for the buttons too much, so they're dim to the point where I can hardly see them. Also, in one of the buttons, you can get a hint of green. And worst of all, none of my lower button lights work anymore. The fresh/recycled air button, the A/C button, and the rear window defroster buttons no longer light up, although their small square indicator lights light up. Also, part of the warmth adjustment area is dim, and the area that surrounds the fan speed knob is very, very dim.

Unless anyone has any ideas, I'm going to scrap this one and just find a used climate control unit, and keep it stock. frown.gif

Here's a photo of what happens when a retarded kid tries to mess with his climate control unit. frown.gif

My lights probably aren't working on the bottom of the box, but they did before. I did take off the green caps.

coomer what type of paint did you use ?

If you want you can just scrape off the paint with some paint thinner and try again.
*Oh you need to get new bulbs ! Go to toyota get new bulbs they are like 6 dollars each put them in and you should be fine.
And you might wanna touch up off on the control.

dont lose hope get the bulbs trust me

Has anyone considered using a blue acetate? I might try placing a blue tint film inside the buttons and see what happens. There is also a great article about how some bloke used a blue neon tube inside his a\c unit in his 7th gen celica at everythingcelica.com (you'll need to register to view the whole article).

I'd think that you'd be left with off-white/greenish light if all you did was remove the covers.

Also, Defgeph, I used the Testors transparent candy apple red paint. I'll try getting new bulbs from Toyota on Monday and see if that solves my problem. How many bulbs did you buy?

all you have to do is take off the condom and twist em in

And if you want Da Heater Box Thingy to be white then just take off the caps ... they just wont be hyper white

second cable (black)....... in the engine bay on the fire wall

unhook both unscrew the box (2 screws I think) unplug the 3 connectors behind the unit and pull it out.......

as you pull it out look at the black cable follow it to the white tube. the tube is a guide back out to the engine bay the pic is below

it in the dash to the left right under the blue cable you'll see the opening

when you put the unit back make sure you put the black cable in that tube

hope that helps you guys

Hey, Having trouble with the britness of the Climate Control??? Well, do I have a solution for you! Cut the GREEN wire in the back of the unit!! wink.gif This is the sending wire that tells the unit to dim the light bulbs. HA! I'm going to try it in a few hours I'll keep you all posted!!! smile.gif

Mine are really dim, so this would help, but I think I'm better off taking off the paint, spraying just one coat on the light reflector things, and then putting it back in.

Also, I have a tiny bit of green showing through at the top of those indicator lights...do you get that defgeph?

No, I dont have any green or clear showing. I painted the little LED reflectors too. Not the LEDs.
Look at my picture above you can see the inside of my buttons.

A bit long but worth it:
smile.gif
Okay so I disconnected the GREEN wire (not the one with a white stripe but the GREEN one!), and then the bulbs didn't light up at all, even after I re-connected it!! confused.gif Wierd huh!! HOWEVER!!! I figured it out, connect the spliced green wire from climate control unit to a GROUND!! HA! and the lights never dim, they are fairly brighter!! Also, try (if you haven't) turning your dim switch all the way on. If you do this mod, you will have to turn it all the way off though! Connecting the green wire to a ground reverses your dim unit!! also strange, but it doesn't matter!! Doing this will save you about $60 for a new unit! Hope this helps!! TIP: DON'T PAINT THE BULBS!! Also, the green tint is comming from the small bulb in the lower left corrner on the circut board. its right below the right bulb, if you pull out that unit you can disconnect that bulb and by increasing the watts (by the mod earlier) the unit wont need that green bulb to light up!!

Hope this helps guys, this SMALL EASY mod has turned into a HUGE hassle!

Why does everyone always do this the hard way? Just disconnect the cables at the climate control box, it's pretty simple to do and alot less time comsuming.
