 Stock battery and alt power handling?, How much wattage? |

Hi all, I'm wondering how much power the stock battery and alternator can handle?
I'm getting a 1000w sound system professionally installed into my car (so I shouldn't have to worry about crappy wiring etc), but I'm wondering if I still have to worry about the lights dimming, etc etc etc? how much power are YOU pulling off your stock alt and batt? (and I've checked these guys out, and some of the installs theve done, and they ARE professionals; no problem there) |

Good question...I'd like to know the answer as well.
I'm thinking that I'm going to have to change the alternator bushes, upgrade to a GT battery and get a CAP, at the very minimum. Another possibility, is buying a new battery to just run the sound system off and running it in-line with the standard battery and installing it in the trunk. you only get like 70 amp for you stock alternator. for you bat just one on it and it will tell you.

im running about 600 watts on my batt and it dims the headlights when the bass hits; its not real, bad but it is noticable.

Thats not necessarily going to help. If you have multiple amps going to speakers that will drain it, plus many people have small caps and you can still see the power draining. |

600 watts shouldn't be a drain with a cap. |

im am not running a cap or ever will. if i am going to do anything i would buy a HO alt and second battery. if i did run a cap my front speakers would probably drain it because i they are getting 200 watts on them. |

if you ad a cap it will fix the dimming, u just need to buy the right one
some are expensive but they work |

CAPS DON"T FIX THE PROBLEM, THEY HIDE IT. The reason your lights dim when the bass hits is the sudden current draw that your alternator and battery can't deal with. That causes a voltage drop and your lights dim. Adding a cap will smooth out the dips but it dosen't fix the problem. If you happen to listen to music with long bass tones a cap can possibly make things worse. If the tone is long enough to drain the caps reserve than you will not only have the amp and battery drawing current but also the cap trying to recharge. That puts even more stress on our already small alternators. To truly fix the problem you need to upgrade the charging system. Alternator battery and wires. The battery and wires are easy. Finding a high output alternator for our car has been a challange for some. |
