how many of you think that the guy doing the smog test will have any clue that you have a jdm engine inside? i mean, they inspect a ton of cars a day and they are all usdm so they will probably think yours is too.

i watched pepboys to my inspection once...they checked the brakes and all that stuff..then they said i was ready to roll....right before ringing me up, one guy said " oh crap, we didnt do smog", hooked the sniffer to my pip and said it was all good. ....so thats about the extent of the effort that most places put into testing your car. they much rather tell you that you have a brake or tire problem (so that they can make money from you) then try to figure out if you have an egr or not.

run leaner fuel maps in stock trim

Actually, the JDM ECU has richer fuel maps, at least thats the case for the ST185's.

The JDM motors are identical to the US motors, with the exception of the EGR. JDM motors have the bungs for EGR, they just aren't bored out. If you check the EPC's - all part numbers are identical.

Oh well, I'm glad I live in Michigan - no emmisions testing here.

The engine is carb legal and smog legal in a MR2 but not in a 6GC. Swapping engines from another model car is not legal.....plus since it is US SPEC the egnine may have a lot of mileage which may cause it not to pass smog.

Well actually it is legal because its from a new car and it is california certified engine! so i meet the standard i jsut have to refe my car as a mr2 turbo engine in a celica
