I hear some of ya guys saying the handling on our Celicas is pretty good. I don't disagree but then again I haven't had the chance to drive any other imports. Does the Celica really handle better than other imports. And I was looking into AutoCrossing with my Celica but saw from the results of runs that the only toyota anyone used was an MR2....How well do you think my 97 Celica could do autocrossing, i plan on getting a strut brace, coilovers, and better wheels...i think that would make my car pretty agile right?

It would work quite well. Celicas are not fast in the line, but they are quick on their feet, so to speak.

autocross is all about the driver. a pinto could rock you if the driver was good... but in turn you could absolutly crush a lambo given the right person behind the wheel...

True enough, But I think that goes for any form of racing. My budy with the 91 CRX SI beat a like95+ f150 the other day. It was really sad. Had him by like three truck lengths. lol

a truck might have tons of horse power but the things weigh tons...thats not really giving the crx much credit IMO...

Yeah Im kinda curious on how well a 6th gen would do on autocross considering how much we brag about how we can take corners and such and that makes up for our low hp output somewhat.

I think John Dolocek(The Evilspeed Toe on Celica.net I believe), the guy who makes the Dr. CAI, does autocross with his car. You may want to ask him about it.

Yup, the celica is a good autocross car. Mine pulls over 1g on street tires, will do 60-0 in 123ft and puts about 126hp to the ground.
But, as the man said, its all about the driver. I've been autocrossing for 4 years now and I still have a lot to learn. |

Your ST makes 126 whp with the CAI, cat back, S-AFC, and pully?

Yeah, roughly that. According to the accelerometer data I've got, it runs 15.80's at about 85 mph. Doing some back calcluating that comes out to about 126whp. The 7A really responds well to mods. When I went to do the safc tuning, I couldn't believe how bad the stock fuel map is. Totally horrible.

All that and only 126hp, kinda seems like a waste of money and time. But it's better than mine. |

Assuming about 15% driveline loss thats 145hp at the crank.
Assuming a more conservative 10% loss thats 138hp at the crank. Not too bad considering a stock ST is rated at 115 at the crank and all I have are minor bolt ons. |

I have autocrossed my 97 gt a couple times. As far as I know it performs really well since it's light, wide, and quick. However, it has been my experience that autocrossing is entirely about the driver and tire pressure. It really doesn't matter what you drive, as long as you know your car well enough to handle the track.
For autocross though I would recomend eibach springs, a trd strut brace, and maybe a sway bar upgrade. Most autocrossing will put you in a different class though. I don't have enough experience at the track so far, but my main claim to fame is beating a Mini Cooper S. lol. |
