I was palnning on doing the 3S swap down the road and am looking to get an exhaust now. I was thinking of trying to save money and get 3" exhaust now. Course i'm worried this will just make me sound like ass and not give me the needed backpressure. So what size piping is everyone here running? Should I just go with 2.25 piping as planned?

I was gona do the "exhaust first, swap later" but the shop I went to wouldnt do 3" piping on my stock engine.

What I would sugest, if you really want piping now, just get some 2.25" crush bend for pretty cheap, then do custom mandrel bent when you do the swap.

Otherwise, just wait.

You DO NOT NEED BACKPRESSURE!!!!! EVER!!!!

Do some reading on exhaust design and search this site for other posts. I've posted links like 5 times to information on this subject.

3" will be just fine for what you're doing.

The only thing you'll feel is the loss of exhaust velocity... which causes a loss of low-mid range torque... until the 3SGTE anyway...

kwanza is correct, basically saying, back pressure is needed. Now, on a V8 or something, back pressure is NOT needed, but the un-stable 4 cyl. needs a little backpressure, such as BEEF's opinion, a cat would be enough back.

see were u guys are getting it wrong is calling it back preasure because that is never good its the momentum of the gas that u are losing because of the size which isn't bad it just doesn't feel right when u are driving.

The whole exhaust and pipin is all custom made so it would have ran about 700 bucks. But since i know the guy he only made my dad pay for parts which came to 365

yes

although a 3" exhaust would yield more power, and it would be needed if you plan on getting more than 50hp over stock on the 3sgte

GRRRR, If one more person says the words 'need backpressure' without prefacing them with 'You do not', I'm going to freaking go ballistic.

Let me say it again, and everybody say it with me: "You DO NOT need backpressure in a modern internal combustion engine."

It has nothing to do with 4cyl, v8 etc, it has to do with cam timing and valve opening and closing events.

And lastly, exhaust gas velocity doesn't mean jack after a turbo. Go as big as you can fit and afford.

If you needed back pressure people wouldnt throw test pipes on integra's.... Which for those of you that dont know, is a straight pipe off the down pipe with no cats, or muffler

It probably won't sound great, but it depends on the muffler.

I think you might have missed the point of my little rant tho...backpressure you don't need...exhaust gas velocity you do need (on an NA car). 3" is too big for an NA 1.8 or 2.2. I'd go with 2.5 or 2.25 instead. 3" would be perfect for a turbo car.
