So the more i think about getting a 3s, i also think, "maybe i should just buy an MR2 turbo.". Look at it like this. I could net 5k for my celica, easily. It'll cost $3k to swap ($1,000 for labor, round $2k for clip and accessories). So if I just saved the 3S cash and sold the Celi, I could buy a MR2 turbo. Then I'd have rwd over fwd, and mid engine.
Pros: Mr2 is sexier, stock for stock, imo RWD, mid-engine t-tops Cons: horrible winter driver. I don't think mr2s can be built to look as sexy as a celica. Celicas can look so diverse. Insurance will jump. 2-seater. Limited space, my college is an hour away from my hometown where my gf and parents are. Can't carry too much. These are just some things I was pondering on. What'd you guys think? Is it worth it to have rwd, baby ferrari (looking), 3s powered car? Or do i stick with the celi, be as fast as mr2turbos, and look really diverse, still with low insurance and winter driveablilty? -------------------- NASA/SCCA RX-7....currently under the knife

I drove my car to put some air in one of the tires today and I still have a hard on. You dont just get power with those cars, you get wicked control, a smooth ass ride, and chicks love it Sadly Im selling mine this tuesday because of money issues but I fully intend to get another next spring! They are just sexy cars, for whatever reason they dont photograph very well, but in person you just wanna hump them! BUt one now!haha
Trunk is actually not bad, cram **** in the front bay if you want. Insurance will be the same if not cheaper believe it or not. 2-seater=no more giving people rides everywhere There are alot of kits for the mr2 and done right they look just as good as a nice celica, besides everyone just gets that gayside kit that every kid and there mom has on every make and model of car ever built. And for the winter get winter tires and you'll be fine, its pretty easy to handle the power of these cars. And dollar for dollar an mr2 will always be faster I dont know where you are getting diverse out of the celica comunity, theres like 3 versions of that car you always see around, veilside, erebuni skirts/lips and gt4 makeover. Mr2s have the wide body kit, border, veilside, toms, greddy, and others that I dont know the name of. Both have pleanty of kits available, but I see more diversity in the mr2 community. its hard to just say "i want to buy an mr-2 turbo" without looking in your area. they are a great investment, my buddy has a N/A mr-2 and it's fun as hell, i couldn't imagine what boosting on it would be like.
but they are hard to find. i wish i saw more on the road, that would mean it would be more likely that i would find one for sale. the ONLY mr-2's i've seen around the chicagoland area have been auto n/a or just n/a. This post has been edited by sinner96ST: May 16, 2004 - 7:12 AM |

An mr2 is more of a toy cause they are so fun to drive. I love driving any kind of 2 seater roadster and rear wheel drive is the best. On the other hand a celica is more practical cause you can fit alot of stuff in it. I thougt about getting one but then i would have had nowhere to put my snowboard or mtn bike. But they are sooooo much fun to drive:)

if you are in a bad climate, you really do need a 2nd car with a MR2. but it is so worth it lol, theres alot of maintanence with an older car, but i find it fun, you learn alot having to fix odd and end things, and most are pretty cheap things to fix, you learn so much about the car, and theres an incredable ammount of info on the car in the MR2OC/MR2FAQ webring. anything you could possably need is on there. The community is awesome, they put on great meets and have some really cool events every year, i havent been fortunate enough to attend one yet.
just know its a project car in its purist form, my car has by far spent more time in the garage than it has out on the road... but when you do take it out theres no better feeling. -------------------- Believer, you'll leave her, in leaving them all No but I don't buy it Like anything you do, as anyone you are Cause I'm... I'd keep the celi...I dunno...maybe i'm just a sucker for the supra lines it follows. I like the mr2's though, I always turn my head to look at them when I see them, but it just seems more of toy like said before...eventually I think you'd move on from that and want something more practical. However, I don't know your situation.

reasons why I didn't get an MR2
3 >> storage: I gotta take stuff to and from college. can't fit big stuff like my snowboard. 2 >> maintenance: at the time I didn't want the worry of maintaining a turbo car. and the number 1 reason, drumroll please 1 >> winter: no way in hell I wanted a rwd, turbo in the snow or otherwise inclement weather. altho I always wanted a MR2 since I was like 8 years old. but I also always wanted a 6g celi, so thats what I got |

K2, why's the maintance so bad? The 3S is good engine, so I would hope that not the problem.
As far as situation goes, all I could ever image needing to lug around is laundry, and bookbag. By the time I got the money together, it'd be the fall. So if I buy an MR2, it'll be next spring. Why take an MR2 threw the winter when you can a Celi? -------------------- NASA/SCCA RX-7....currently under the knife

yes, the 3s is a great engine but heres a rundown of some of the problems ive had with my car: 1) its a known problem the factory starter has trouble mating with aftermarket flywheels for some reason, and my fidanza wasnt mating well. so first maintanence done was replacing the starter 2) Wiring. when it gets old, starts to short and have very odd problems, hence my electrical system can be screwy at times, and my alarm would go off if i unlock the door from the driver side. other odd problems came up when i installed my CD player. im contimplating getting a new wiring harness from toyota in about 2 years, which is a 900 dollar and about 3 week investment. 3) small pinion gear broke in my speed gear. to get to it meant taking off a motor mount and related hardware, part wasnt expensive, but its a pain to work on. 4) valve cover gasket leak... happens to the best of them, and it happened to me as well. its an old car, odd parts will break on old cars, its just a fact of life so it takes a little extra preventitive and reactive maintanence to keep her running strong. -------------------- Believer, you'll leave her, in leaving them all No but I don't buy it Like anything you do, as anyone you are Cause I'm...
