Important Americans that helped change America

James Meredith
Jame mMerdith was born on June 25,1993 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. He served in the American Air Force for nine years and then moved on to study at Jackson State College. When he applied at the at the University of Mississippi and was rejected twice, he filed a complaint that he was being rejected because of his race. The district court disregarded his complaint but the Fifth Judicial Circuit Court supported his complaint. When the fact was pointed out that this was a case of segregation in public education, the University fought back. Riots broke out. Meredith was threatened as well as his supporters. Once he was accepted and graduated from the University of Mississippi, James Meredith started the “March Against Fear”. This march was organized to protest against racism in voting ,schools, and transportation. While marching, Meredith was shot and hospitalized. However, this didn’t stop him. Once his treatment was over, James Meredith rejoined the march and reached his fianl goal.

Fanny Lou Hamer
Fanny Lou Hamer was born in 1917 in Mississippi. She was the youngest of 19 children, all of which were slaves. When she was 44 years old, SNCC volunteers asked if anyone wanted to go to the courthouse and register to vote. When Fanny raised her hand, she was playing with fire. This did not discourage her though, when her and a few other African Americans went to the courthouse to register to vote, they were beaten and put in jail. Not only did she get kicked off the plantation at which she was enslaved, but she also received constant death threats. To make matters worse, people actaully shot at her.Still, this did not discourage her. She became a SNCC Field Secretary and traveled around the country encouraging African Americans to register to vote. Not only did she convince many blacks to fight for their right to vote, but Hamer also co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. She explained to the Credentials Committee that African Americans were being denied their right to vote and in the end, two blacks were given speaking privileges at the convention. Fanny Lou Hamer died in 1977 at the age of 59, but her legacy lives on.

Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was born in Alabama, she was known as Rosa Louise McCauley. She attended Alabama State Teachers College and then settled in Montgomery with her husband. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks made history when she refused to move from her seat on a bus for a white man. At this time, even public transportation was segregated under law and Parks was arrested. This event started the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted a little over a year. When taken to the Supreme Court, an order was passed that declared segregation in public transportation unconstitutional. The Montgomery Bus Boycott ended the next day. Though Rosa Parks ended this segment of segregation, those who still believed blacks were inferior still often attacked her. Life became very hard for Rosa and her husband, Raymond, and they ended up moving to Detroit where Rosa was hired as a seamstress. In 1965, she was appointed as a secretary and receptionist in the congressional office of the African American U.S. Representative John Conyers. Her husband died of cancer in 1977, but Rosa lived on until the year 2005. At this point, she was 92 years old. Rosa Parks changed the nation for every american. She made it known that segregation was wrong and that blacks were equal to whites in every aspect. She began the fight against segregation, showing the world that blacks had never been,or ever will be again, an inferior race.

Civil rights
There have been many people in the recent decades that have impacted the civil rights movement. Many of them have made amazing advancements to obtain equality for all Americans, regardless of skin color.Although many crimes have been commited on both sides of the fight, the fighting is almost over. Both sides of the civil rights war have taken shots at eachother, literally and figureativly. There has been amazing inspiration from both sides, from songs,to protests,to even refusing to get out of your seat on a bus, civil rights and equalityism is a must for the majority of the African Americans.Even though some white Americans argue that equality will never be completly obtained,African Americans demand to have 100% equality. Minorities of all races, even some agreeing white persons, demand equalioty and will do anything and ev erything to obtain it.
