I found this post on a UK forum. Food for thought.

QUOTE

Booked my car in for it's MOT, 50k service and lift bolts today, so I took the opportunity to get a trade in price on my G7.

The salesman, who sold me the car originaly, told me: "The new Celica will be out 1st week of July 2005, similar price bracket but a completely new car. Top of the range model will have a supercharger . There will be no delays with supply, as Toyota aim to have a substantial number in the country for the release date and pre ordering will not be necessary".

He claims to have this information, 1st hand, from a former Toyota UK employee who is now based in Japan preparing the promotional work for the new car. This chap apparently is aligned to the F1 promotion also, and has supplied him with brief detail of the Supra, both cars are designed to maximise on the involvement in F1.

He choose to tell me to wait, rather than sell me a new car, despite the fact he knows I have a time limit on ownership to maintain my company car allowance! He must be confident!

I left the garage one very excited bunny, and today I start saving for the Supercharged G8. Please let it be true. As he gave the same date as Shutty I am left wondering if this date is common knowledge throughout the dealerships?

For what it is worth I will recount to the best of my ability his detail regarding the Supra (bearing in mind I had just been told the G8 will have a supercharger and my eyes were rapidly glazing over).

"The new Supra will be aimed squarely at the supercar league, it will have a carbon fibre body and F1 technology to ensure it can compete with the existing market products with regard performance and handling (911, Gallardo, baby Aston etc) but retain Toyota's image of reliabilty and ease of use on a daily basis. The projected purchase price will be around £70k".

At this point I was mentally remapping my new supercharged G8 for maximum performance and missed anything else he had to say about it!

I was never a fan of the 7th gen aesthetically, but hopefully the 8th gen will fix that.

Why would you believe that? They wouldn't do that, it would be a stupid move.

They will not stop making Celicas. They will just not import them in the states maybe. They will try to replace the Celi with the Scion Tc because it will be a lot cheaper.

I have been waiting for this kind of info for the last couple of years. It made no sense to me for Toyota to be involved in F1 and discontinue its sports products. I know there are some Lexus cas that are pure power but if they were planning to stuck on them, they could have easily name their F1 team under Lexus and not Toyota.

The Supra is going to be amazing. The Celica looks promising aswell but its going to need a lot more to reach the 6 gen GT4. The next few months are going to be interesting

I think that post is mostly speculation. Doesn't sound like anything Toyota would ever attempt. Specifically, the Celica is currently rumored (in more reliable sources than a forum post) to be mounting a new head design being built by Yahama integrating Variable Valve Timing with Lift and Intelligence (VVTL-i) onto the 2.4 liter 2AZ block, whose engines are currently found in base model Camrys, Solaras, and the Scion tC. As for anything relating to a Supercharger, again more speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if it came as a TRD S/C option (like on many USDM cars here)... but most likely not as a production engine built for boost. However, if Toyota decides to mount a design such as VVTL-i on that rod stroke ratio (2AZ's big stroke), they might run into the same problem Honda ran into with the H22As... expense. They'll probably have to overbuild the bottom end with much stronger rods to withstand the increased revving related to VVTL-i and in turn, the price of the cars with that engine increases. This was a direct link to that death of the Prelude.

I'll also agree with neoklis that there is a slight possiblity Celicas might not reach our shores (not sure for Canada... but the US perhaps) because of the competition issue between the Celica and the tC. As far as I know currently, the tC is a USDM only vehicle... but not sure exactly. It would be awesome if an 8th gen comes, perhaps with the same relationship to the tC as what the RSX and the Civic SI currently share... but that's only hope... and a 2005 July date would even be more awesome.

If they stop making celi's then they'll start with a new car, although the tc is like a celica, its would possible replace it but toyota itself would prolly roll out a new car with a larger v6 or so, if not make the solara more sportier

It's all speculation at this point.. but I believe the TC might be the replacement for the Toyota Celica.. that's the theory, anyway...

but i could be wrong...

Some more food for thought.. and I could be wrong, but I believe we have now seen the longest ever run of a model celica with the 7th gen... (closely followed by the 6th gen) and that is not helping all of your theories.

Surely Toyota would have at least run a concept car in a motorshow by now if they were working on a new car...

Edit - And I have been to 2 big Aussie shows with all sorts of Toyota concepts, and followed the Japanese ones to some extent, and there wasn't anything that remotely resembled a celica.

Well..my two cents...is that...from what I've read...Toyota is supposedly gonna quit makin' the Celica for the States...I read that this could be a possibility due to the fact that there is no competition for the Celica...No Prelude = No Celica...but..now that the RSX and and other competitors are in town...I personally think that mite change.. confused.gif

Longest running celica? How do you figure? 6th gens= 94-99 5 years. 7th gens= 00-04 4 years. and I believe the previous generations beat both.

The 1st gens ran the longest overall at 7 years... the 6th gen ran the longest out of the FF versions though...

if the volta comes out, it'd most likely go down in hp and torque, and make it more sophiticated (idk if thats spelled right). But it'd still be fast as hell!

yeah, i don't think people would be buying it for it's looks.

This second generation Hybrid Synergy Drive system uses the 3.3-liter V6 common to a variety of Toyota/Lexus products, plus two powerful electric motors to produce a phenomenal 408 horsepower (300 kW). Needless to say the lightweight sports car is quick, shooting forward from standstill to 100 km/h in a sizzling 4.03 seconds before reaching a terminal velocity of 250 km/h (155 mph).

I'm sure the 7th gen was first released mid 99. At least in Japan and Australia because both models were available that year. I didn't know about the 1st gens @ 7 years (ta kwanz), but considering they haven't announced the new car or shown concepts, it would be at least a year or 2 away.
