I've used the search function but nothing really points out anything for convertibles. I mean I know its pretty high risk having a convertible already, and I know if someone wanted to there's nothing I can really do... but atleast I can deter most of the less talented thieves and be alarmed asap when something happens. My car is right by my window now.
btw one of those posts i read it was bad to leave your car off and in gear. why? |

That's most likely because your alarm may come with a remote starter. If you started the car in gear, it would move...or so I've heard. I have an automatic so I don't know. |

Obi, here's what you need for your vert alarm:
1) Starter kill 2) Proximity 3) See if you can rig some sort of alarm to go off when the hood is open- OR an alarm that when alarmed, won't let the hood be popped. (Right now, I can reach in and pop the hood with the alarm on..) 4) Trunk open alarm. those are the two main things. Bonus items: Remote start Remote windows (this way, the windows are down for you to put the top down immediately when you get in the car) Some things that are less important in a vert: Window break alert (they'll go in through the roof..) |

i just hooked up my Viper V791 and i has all the features. theres a hoodpin switch so that id the hood opens, the alarm goes off, or if the trunk gets opened, starter kill(standered in all alarms), and of course shock sensor. those are the main ones u want. u might want to think about a proximity and turning it down so that itll go off if some get IN ur car(otherwise it gets annoying IE if a car parks next to u itll go off....which leads to less security cause u think that itll be false alarms all the time. and of course remote start

I also have a viper, and on top of that stuff just mentioned, it comes with a little remote that shows your car and pages you when an alert is set off. It then shows you what the alert was, like the door, trunk, hood or just a regular sensor from a bump.

Yeah thats proximity alarm. I really like that remote control thing, how much do those Viper Alarms cost?
edit: wow about 600 bucks with installation. I couldn't find their website though. Anyone got it? I'm kind of stuck between the viper v791 and the clifford g5. The g5 has the remote warning too. Do you guys know anything about these two? What would you suggest? This post has been edited by obi1kinob: Jun 23, 2004 - 12:08 AM |

If your looking around 600 bucks.. I would say stop by bestbuy, cause as most say, its not the alarm for the most part, but the install. I Like the cliffords.. they have the newist 2 way ones too.. Thats what i had on my bimmer, an just transfered to my celi... Its great, but mine has a busted screen when i got in my wreck.. but its nice.. and they can hook you up with all the prox sensors and everything, thell tell ya want you need. and should be less then 500 installed ..

I recommend DEI which makes viper/clifford/hornet. I have a convertible also. You need a radar sensor. It has 2 stages. If someone walks too near, it warns them away. If they put their hand into the inside of the car it rings. I would also recommend 2 (piezo)pain generator sirens. I have a very anal alarm, I spent money to buy the backup battery, backup battery siren, a load of different sensors-3 shock sensors, hood and trunk pins, hoodlock, audio(glass breakage sensor), tilt sensor, and the radar. On top of that I use a footbrake lock and the autotaser. I know it sounds like overkill, but its not. Before I bought anything, I bought the alarm. It should be number 1 on anybodys list. Once you invest in rims, bodykit, dvd/navagation system, seats, your a target. Dont be a easy one. My roomate got ripped off twice. Hes a idiot by the way. I told him to get an alarm, and he didn't listen. they broke into his prelude and stoled his stereo. A year later no alarm still, he put rims and another stereo. this time they stole his car and stripped it. He now has an alarm, but a cheap one. Put the money into an alarm, its worth the money.

I got it all on ebay. Do a search for DEI. All the sensors and sirens and alarms are on there. There cheap also. The pain generator sirens are 9.00 bucks. Everybody else sells them for 25. The radar sensor is 45 new on ebay. Shopshave sold these for 150!! I got the footbrake lock at checkers and the autotaser at spy headquarters.
