I dont want to do a 3S swap. I want to do everything myself, and Im very inclined to do so. I cant handle the wiring and extra stuff that a 3S would take so please, I ask that swappers leave their opinions out of this topic unless helpful.
This winter is nicknamed "Celica overhaul" Im going to do everything I possibly can to my Celica which means a built 5S. I know Race Motorsports makes 8.5 turbo pistons for the 5S but I'm more or less looking for a completely ported and polish, 100% done 5S block. I did a search for it once and someone posted a great link but I cant find it anymore. Any help would be great. Thanks guys. |

You'd only lower compression if you want to turbo the car (but it sounds like you know that as you refered to it as "turbo pistons") increased compression is the way to go.. I'm also very interested in what gets said in this topic. I believe the link you are referring to links to a company that sells built up 5sfe short blocks.

Here is a rebuilt block. I'm thinking about going this route. And working the head. Would make it alittle faster and still pretty reliable.

yea, thats the link I found in the search forum
one problem though... 10.5!!! ouch for a turbo guy. Otherwise this sounded great. I'm wondering if they'd put the Race Engineering pistons in at the same price??? But if I got that... you add Web Cams (est 30 crank HP increase since the cams are 22* apart ... sh.tty econ design), add a nice intake, a free flow exhaust, underdrive pulley, alum flywheel, nice plugs and wires, upgrade ignition, and what not and we all might be close too a CRANK 200 N/A HP. w00t!!! Slap a turbo on that b.tch and kiss some v8's goodbye. |

Thats a pretty high goal, 200hp NA. Those mods on alot of cars would bring in some good numbers but the 5sfe is a PITA. Jim Snodgrass did that all and more and could only net 145ish HP to the wheels. Thats the highst recorded NA 5sfe dyno to date. Right now he's working on this its a 5sgTe. Those are the pistons Im having installed in my car tomorrow. I'd also use 3sgte rods (Have the rod jurnals turned down to stock 3sgte rod specs) If you want valves and/or valve springs ferra makes custom 5sfe valves....They'll cost you 2/3 a st185 clip tho. -------------------- Member of Team 5sfTe

1b... I said crank HP not wheels. But that engine is quoted at 155 crank. And everyone with webcams along with Jim Snodgrass said that they add about 30 because of the crappy econ design of the engine. Well adding, thats 185. I'm assuming with all the others mods I listed, they could be around 15 which is a 200 N/A CRANK. Now, i'm a realistic person. Intake doesn't at 20Hp, nor does exhaust. But I dont see 200 N/A crank power being that impossible. And then 1b.... do your turbo kit how-to and BAM... cant wait to see those numbers. Edit1: PITA? sorry, never heard of this term Edit2: I looked on Jims site, the stuff I said moreorless is what he did. So this setup will probably yeild 130-150WHP.
Edit3: Please inform us of those pistons when you get it back tomorrow ![]() This post has been edited by turboinduction: Jul 12, 2004 - 3:15 PM |

You know what'd funny? You can do all this and hit 200crankhp, and I'll still beat you by spraying.
Anways- I do really respect what you're trying to do, and now you've got me looking into this. You could prove me and others wrong, that the 5S isn't just a another econ motor. I'd also like to see a lay out, of product and pricing and hp gains. How much do you have to spend? How much do u think this'll cost? Well, the setup on the website is good for 155hp. That's only 20 more then stock. So you wanna pay $1,400 for 20+ more hp? You it'll be even more then that once throw in gaskets and seals and fuilds n junk.
But on the up-side, it's like a new motor, so it's like your celica is born again. What's maged and shot-peened? You'd still need (or use the stock) crank, cams, vaules, vaule springs, and what else major? -------------------- NASA/SCCA RX-7....currently under the knife

yes only 20 more than stock - but built for beating. I know I dont wanna turbo mine 105k engine. 1400 for a brand spanking new block thats upgraded and reading for abuse isn't too bad. And yes you still use stock crank, cams and what not. Thats why I said if you upgrade those then 200 n/a isn't that far away. |

Sorry I missed the crank part. I do agree that with some heavy mods to the head you can pull 200 at the crank (even more if you tune it right). I got my CP's from ChrisK on mr2oc.com hes the only dealer at the moment NOT backstocked. I have to have the crank sent out for the milling and all so it may be close to a week before I get it back running. Once its home Im going to put a few hundred NA miles and then install all the toys FINALY. Its only been over 2 years gathering parts and 1 of the car not running right. -------------------- Member of Team 5sfTe
