Being the U.S. representative for Varis, I've been toying around with doing another project car for them. I've seen alot of attempts at turning 6th gen celicas into ST205 GT-FOURs but I also saw a guy in Australia who turned a ST185 GT-FOUR into a RWD monster by dropping a Lexus V8 in it and making it RWD.

Seeing as how the U.S. Spec Celicas have the driveshaft tunnel and I already have a AWD Celica, I've been thinking it would be pretty dope to convert a U.S. Spec 6th gen into RWD with a 3SGTE. I already have a spare rear diff from my ST185 which is a small, yet vital, part that I will need....

What are your thoughts on such a project??

i personally dont think it would be worth it. someone on here, coverted a non rwd to a rwd .. but then somthing broke.. Its goign to take a lot of time and money.. and I still dont think it would be that safe to drive, unless you did a ton of **** to back it up.. .. but it would be nice to see.

I saw that turbo V8-powered ST185...that car was so awesome! It'd be really cool so see a sixth generation Celica turned into something like that. smile.gif

also another ting about the one that was made rwd, it was already awd right?.. If your taking somthing from awd to rwd that would be sweet.. nice for drifting, but i would almost say keep it rwd ... but also snece you import, why not just import a gt4 body an such then go from there..

^^ im with him it will be different and really good. as for the all wheel steering didnt the early 5th gens come with that feature? i know the 1st gen camrys had the all wheel steering along with the early preludes but not the 6th gen celicas.

but roo i say go for the rwd 6th gen. it would be a nice project and a good track car also. ive been pondering doing extreme mods like this but with out access to a lift its gonna suck working on the ground and on your back. so for now ill do the basic suspension setup and hopefully in a few years ill have enough time and money to do either the RWD or AWD conversions smile.gif

question.....what broke and why?

The only difference on the ST205 chassis is the rear. I am aware I will need to fabricate custom engine mounts, make adjustments and additions to the front steering and suspension setup, a custom driveshaft, and a custom gas tank.

The reason I won't use a ST205 to base this off of is cost and legality. Although a 3SGTE swap is by no means legal, the chassis would be.

Im not sure what exactly brok, I know that it was when he ws on the high way, he hit the breaks and something snapped, I think a mount or a weld holding the rear togeather .. It was someone on here.. but i cant remember. Maybe they cant respond or if any one else knows..

If you have the rear diff and rear drive shafts it shouldn't be a problem. Just fab the mounts and drop some sort of rwd engine in it. Is there a older lexus V6? smile.gif

neverstop did an AWD conversion with a 3sgte, but he said it was unstable at highspeeds in excess of 120mph and that he felt unsafe with it

trunk pans, fuel tank and lines are all different... along with the entire rear suspension and added drivetrain parts... It's do-able... all depends on one's money, ingenuity and time... also... I hear many rear suspension parts between the ST205 and RAV4 are very similar... so that's a donor option for us in the U.S...

i was thinkin bout that one day... i was looking at a supra that did the 3sgte conversion and i was like...there is enought room to turn the engine in the celica so it is longitudially mounted(ours are factor transvers mount) and put what ever tranny the supra uses on it(possibly also the rear diff and transaxels)...i would love to see it done. it is a dream of mine to do it eventually but if you are able to do it it'll give a lot of people hope and assurance that everything hasn't been tried and there is still room to be unique with the celica's...good luck man. and keep us updated.

uhm, no. Someone puts the AWD in, then takes it out. Without ever, taking a single picture of it. Oh yeah, then they say they took pictures of it, but never produce any, promise uploads.. 6 months back. In fact, there's no picture even of his 3sgte mounted- just a 5sfe on an engine stand.

I say I dont believe him, because there's no proof that he did such things when so many have tried and failed; so for him to say that "it felt unsafe" at high speeds is potential misinformation. I'm alerting anyone to that, just like you'd alert a bad transaction with a bad seller.

Back on topic now...

Let's get down and dirty with the possible parts. If the 3SGTE is to be used, it'll bolt up to the W series tranny (those on the old RWD celicas amougst many others). I believe the bellhousing is a direct bolt-up to the engine and at the very most, some minor modifications. The water lines, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, throttle cable, speedo cables, wiring harness, along with motor mounts and possibly accesories (depending on clearence issues) will have to be custom fabricated... The firewall might also have to be modified to fit the tranny... but that's just a maybe. Tranny mounts will be custom and most likely a custom drive shaft will have to be made. It's a lot of work... but a RWD celica will be the result, along with some drifting pleasure and the pure joy of FR driving... ;] That's not including the rear-end BTW...

Alternate motors that will work: 2/3RZFE's from the Tacomas along with associated drivetrain parts and underhood goodies (engine has size and some serious potential with forced induction)... 1/2/3MZFE V6 with W series tranny (they bolt up to the same tranny as the 3SGTE).

There are many others, including oldies such as the 18/20/21/22R's, 4AGs, 2/3T's... etc... however, I'm also taking into account the longitual length of these motors, and am trying to keep them workable under the 6th gen hood... I wish I had a crap load of money to blow.

roo: why don't you try this on your ST185 (if you still got it)? It'll be easier... considering the only thing you need to worry about is underhood stuff... just a thought...

To close... not the kind of conversion that you can do in your backyard, unless your backyard is like mine (a garage with the works)... but would be nice to see.

Who cares if he did or not? We know that its been done by at least the guy who has his for sale on Ebay right now. Bottom line is that it is possible but very difficult.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

Jay, my point was that his "unstable at high speeds" comment can not be held to be the 100% truth, since there's doubt as to weither he did it or not. I didn't want that comment to discourage people from trying.

I think it is reasonable to have doubts about Neverstop's claims given the lack of proof - although I wouldn't call him a liar. My only point is that at least someone has done it and it worked. As for the stability issue, there is a guy on Celica.net that did an AWD conversion in a 4th gen which was unsuccessful. I think his name might be Jeremy? Anyway, I read one of his posts that indicated that the car was VERY unstable at any speed. So, I do believe that if its not done right, you are going to have stability issues, not to mention abnormal tire wear, safety concerns, and ridgity problems that will make our discussion about flex in a convertible sound like a couple of little old ladies worrying about nothing.
