are these really nesessary ? I have seen them and they seem to cover 1/3 or 1/2 of the filter ( wouldn't that seem to restrict air flow? ) and how much heat do they really shield. They seem to me to be just for looks.

Let's hear some opinions on this...

The heat shield on the injen intake "blocks" hot air from the engine bay, causing more air to be sucked in from the hole where the stock airbox sucked in cold air.

I got one on my injen intake. I think it helps a lot on restricting that hot engine air and giving my of the cold air from the stock intake holes.

I don't know if it makes any difference, cause the intake piping is hot when the engine is hot regardless of whether or not it has a heatsheild on it.

Air is a great insulator, which means that it doesn't transfer heat that well. I suspect that air is moving too quickly to absorb much heat from the piping walls, therefore 6strings argument fails. That said, it doesn't prove a heatshield works, as im not sure how well a heat shield block heat form the rest of the bay.... or if the 10 degree difference between engine bay and the rest of the air is noticeable tongue.gif But hey, its not like its hard to make.

This is a bit off. You're right about air being a good insulator...but only when it's stationary. Circulating air is one of the best ways to transfer heat. I really doubt that nearly any heat shields are a benifit. Maybe some of the best engineered ones are, but I believe that most just end up restricting the air flow. I ran my CRX for a little while with absolutely no air filter. I don't recommend it to at all, cause who knows what crap you'll suck in...maybe a bolt or something, lol. laugh.gif But anyway, reguardless of the rather hot air I was sucking in, my throttle response was absolutely instantaneous and awesome. smile.gif Now I've got an AEM cold air intake on it, and I get a broader power range, but not the heady, roaring, slightly less hp of before. Conclusion: Any filter, short ram, or cold air intake is going to restrict your air flow a little, but it's worth it if it's really sucking in cold air. Low quality heat shield = crap, cause it restricts air flow significantly, and hardly (if any) makes the air colder.

I asked my friend the same thing about the intake tube being so hot..
My friends point was that if you don't have a heat shield, you suck in (lets say 80 degree air, then the intake tube heats it up to 90 before it goes into the intake manifold. but if the shield drops the air going into the intake filter to 70 degrees, then it will be 80 when it goes into the intake manifold. (ie the tube adds like 10 degrees))

i'm not sure if this is true or not, but it makes sense..

hopefully the koyo radiator I'm getting will reduce the underhood temperatures so that my intake will actually suck in colder air. though it's probably just wishful thinking...

Yea my car runs really cold. My heat bar is like a quarter of the way to the C, Because i have the big air dam in my front bumper. My zyclone hood, and i have a bigger radiator installed so my car runs really really cold.

I don't use a heat sheild for it's normal purpose as we tested a celica on a RR with & without with no noticable difference. We then run 3 cold air feeds & got some good positive changes, then added the sheild to act more as a air catcher for the cold air ducts!

The operating temperature is supposed to reach halfway on the gauge. If it doesn't it maybe means your thermostat needs replacing kindasad.gif

random crap:

unless your heat shield and intake tube are plastic, they won't won't do much. the themal conductivity of metals (in general) is much higher than plastics.

long story short, any metal object is going to transfer alot of any heat incident on it to anything it touches. that's why most cookware is metal. plastics, rubber, foam, etc are all better insulators.
