I have the 5sfe. I need to know a few things about the fuel filter. Is it under the air box? Does anyone have a how to? How much time does it take to replace (estimated)? What complications are there to changing the filter? Will this improve mpg and throttle response? My GT has 183k miles and the accelerator feels a little sluggish at times. I dont think the previous owner changed the filter at all. She was driving around with a big space missing from the gasket that goes on the valve cover. rolleyes.gif Any info woll help, Thanks all.

i think the filter would be in the same place as the ST

which is behind the drivers side strut tower and down a little bit.

with your car, if it hasnt been chenged for that long, expect it to be a bitch. as it is its a little hard to reach and get wrentches in there, but when fuel filters get old, the metal gets weak and they bend and almost break. you have to be careful to not strip anything and not damage the fuel lines

It is in the same place as the ST. Also if the filter is really old like you think it is. Among those things that 97 just listed, the filter will become clogged after a long time. I changed it in my old truck and MPG increased dramatically and so did throttle response. Gas gets to your fuel rail a lot faster if the filter is not clogged. Also you might want to consider changing your fuel pump as well. Sometimes those can crap out on you as well but as I understand it is a bitch to replace, because you have to take the fuel tank out.

are you sure about taken the gas take out to replace. If you lift up the rear seat I think the plate is right there. then unbolt an unplug, then replace..

Fuel filter

Does the above filter on the link look like the correct one? Is it for both the ST and the GT? Are they cheaper at the parts shop?

EDIT: Thanks for the info so far, guys. biggrin.gif

i replaced mine recently, sorry to say its a bitch, i have a gt to so this is what i did, move big hose thing to the air box, thats all u need, then for wrench sizes i forgot but the bottem is reverse threaded, also be carefull there is little parts that will fall out once u undo it, and the bottem fuel line is steel so dont bend it. this will take 30 mins depending on the person. o yea dont do it on asphault gas sprays like a bitch sometime. but it always leaks so put a pan under there. (you wont want to reuse the gas by the way), it also helps to make sure that u havent driven the car so the engine wont be hot.

i did a whole engine swap and other major work on my car, and i think im going to pay the dealer to do that filter for me... the filter is on so tight and there is very little room to work with, that you run the risk of damaging your fuel lines if you mess up.

i guess i should have just changed mine when the engine was out...lol.

Use a good set of clean flare wrenches for the fuel lines. I think they're made out of brass and its easy to strip them. A flare wrench is like a box end wrench with a small part of it cut away so you can slip it over the fuel line, so it gives more cover then using an open ended wrench. They're made for fuel lines and brake lines.

I just did mine. It was 17$ at advanced auto. The Fuel lines threaded fitting was alittle stripped from someone before but it wasnt too bad. I did bust my hand though and that was fun with gas in the cut smile.gif

I also just did my corolla's too and that was a pain. Someone completely stripped the fitting on that and i had to grab it like crazy with some huge vice grips. I also used lots of PB blaster cause it was corroded.
