Coilovers are no fun!!! Options

i went on a trip to see my girlfriend who goes to school at chapel hill this weekend and i really have to vent about my coilovers. THEY SUCK!!!! yea, they make the car look really good and all, but riding on the interstate sucks with stock shocks. i hit bridges where it has a lip and my speaker box flew up in the air, ripped the power wire out, and blew my fuse under the hood for my amp. it was not a fun ride listening to treble for 2 hours. oh well, guess its something i gotta live with until i get new shocks. thanks for lettin me get that outta my system. anyone else need to vent then nows the time.

damn that sucks, so if i put my coilovers in and do bout a 2" drop, does that mean that i should stick to the actual speed limit?

What kind of coilovers do you have? I used to have some cheap ones that I found on eBay and they were horrible!

what kind and how far did you drop your car? i have Ground Control coilovers and i dropped my car 2.5". the ride was bareable, but some bumps did not go over well. the ride was rougher than stock yes, but by no means was it horrible. i did raise my car up though, to about 1.75" lower than stock. now the ride is much much better, no more bottoming out, and those old bumps are much much more smooth. oh yeah, i'm on stock shocks too. i know those cheap ebay coilovers are crap, i drove bryan's car (cragspider) and they were like ridin on a trampoline..

I just got Ground Control Coilovers installed on Saturday and guest what guys my shocks are not going to good with the coilovers. I'm going to have to change my shocks to make the ride feel better. I'll keep you guys posted on how the ride quality goes. I'm going to install the KYB shocks.

i got the ones off ebay. i dropped it about 3 inches with my 18's. looks good, rides like ass.

yeah my coilovers suck too......but i have been told its because of the shocks....mine are still stock.....i have to be very carefull on bumps and stuff......i cant drive like the crazy maniac i am.......anyone know where i can get some KYB shocks and for how much???

If I were you I would not go for KYB GR-2. REason being is that they are OEM shocks of our factory shocks. If you get the KYB GR-2 shocks I bet you any money they would blow within the year or 2. Search on the internet for more feedback from other users that have KYB's installed in their car. Search for this... "KYB SHOCK REVIEW" You will find your answers there. I would recommand you getting Koni Yello's. I just got my car lowered last Saturday and I hate the ride. My shocks are gone to but I'm going for the Koni's. There life time warranty just remember that.

You see if you get the KYB's there is no warranty on them. They are not meant to be matched with lowered springs. I got all this info from different sites. Well if you plan to keep your car for awhile then get the Koni's if you plan to get rid of your car soon then KYB would be the way to go because it is cheaper. If you think about two sets of KYB's would cost you around trhe same price as Koni's bro.

Trust me guys type this out in your search engine and read what others are experiencing.

They're around $600 for all four struts, and then installation will cost a lot for the back probably because the Koni Yellows are just cartridges. This means that you need to cut off part of your strut and weld a new piece on to install them. I would've gotten these struts, but really, it'd probably cost me $800 or so, instead of the $200 I paid for my KYB GR-2s.

Okay folks I just got Koni Yellow's installed this week. Ride feels much better. however whenever I'm at a full stop and if I make a turn 90 degrees to 360 degrees with my wheel to park I will here a knocking noise from the front. Seems like something is grinding or loose. The shop claims that it is normal for the Celica's since the original springs are bigger then the aftermarket springs.

Anyody know what that could be? If I go fast as in turn right or left I will not hear it at all. I have Ground Control Coilovers with the Koni's.

Who has this combination for their suspension?

Wow even with the Koni's it's making a noise in the front? I have GC's as well but still riding on stock springs. Mine right now are making undescribable racketing/squeeking/chattering noises. I woulda thought with the Koni's you'd get a lil better ride quality than any other shock mod that's out there? Ride quality on my celi is bearable but I wish it was a lil better.

White GTS Does your GC's sound like the spring is vibrating/moving about on the perch??

I had Ground Control coilovers for one week prior to getting the Koni Yellows's installed. Once I got the Ground Control coilolvers I wanted to throw away my car cause the handling and ride feeling was so bad. It was making all kind of noises when I turned and went over a bumpy road plus I would be bouncing up and down going at high speeds. I relized that I damaged my factory Shocks once I lowered it since my car is a 94 and I guess it was time for a replacement anyways. Once I replaced the shocks ride was excellent but it still made that knocking / racketing noise when I made my turns at reversing or parking speed.

Don't get me wrong Koni's made a big different but I think the noise is caused by the Ground Controls ince I had it from day one of installing them in.

CelicaQT I think you need to replace your shocks.

Thanks for the insight White_GTS. I've been debating what to do. I'm kinda in a jam with the $$$. Still gotta pay my tuition for this semester. But I'm def. going to change them. I was going the KONI route anyways.

I wanted good quality handling from the beginning...that's the reason why I chose GC's. I knew I was going to replace my shocks...I just had to wait a lil bit.

The noises aren't bad.....just a lil annoying.

But usually once you change something...there's always going to be that risk having something not go as planned.

Oh maybe you need to greese those bearings?? Unless you've already done that.

Well I'm going back to the shop to have it looked at again. They think the the metal stoper on top of the springs is making the noises. You see when it turns the metal and the spring both turns different directions. Must be some tension between them to cause the noise. I've had it lubed up already and it's not helping. I should of just got TEINS or JIC's since I used a lot of frigging dough already.

Well I'm glad that I'm not the only one with ground control coilovers on. Do you knwo anyone elkse whith this problem with the same coilovers as us. I see that we both have the same noise in away but what do you plan to do to get rid of it. Remember a car is suppose to be quite when turning. Plus after market suspension should improve things or at least be equal.

I feel scammed right now shiet.

I have the GC coilovers and KYB GR2's, they ride pretty nice @ about 2". And that noise when you are turning sounds like one of your cv joints is blown. That's what happened to me when I first lowered my car, you might need to lift it up a little more if you dont want to be replacing axles all the time.

I have probably ****ty coilovers from EBAY, Dropzone, but my ride quality so far is pretty good, except when i hit railroads tracks! then it's a totaly different story, the only complaint that i have is that oddly, sometimes i get a Creaking noise from my front left side when i turn my wheel wheni am going super slow ( about 5 - 10km). It sounds like something needs some oiling.

Does anyone know what that would be, or just an affect fromt he coilovers i can't do anything about.
