Toyota To Discontinue Production Of The Celica And MR2 Sports Cars By The End Of 2005 Model Year

July 16, 2004 - Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced its plans to discontinue sales of the Celica and MR2 sports cars by the end of the 2005 model year.

"The Celica and MR2 have been a favorite amongst sports car enthusiasts since their introductions in the U.S.," said Don Esmond, senior vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division. "The past few years, however, have been very challenging for both Celica and MR2 as competition in a segment where 'what's new' dominates and we continue to add more exciting and youthful products to the lineup such as the Matrix and Corolla XRS, Solara sports coupe and recently the Scion xA, xB and tC."

Currently in its seventh generation, the Celica was first introduced in the U.S. in 1971 and was influential in establishing the sporty subcompact segment. Since that time it has been named Motor Trend's "Import Car of the Year," one of Car and Driver's "Ten Best Cars," and the "Most Reliable Sporty Car" by Consumer Reports.

Based on the EX-1 "Car of the Future" concept vehicle, its styling was revolutionary when it first hit the market. The Celica was originally designed for consumers who were young at heart and wanted something more than just simple transportation.

Toyota introduced the popular mid-engine, rear-wheel drive two-seater "Mr. Two" in 1985. The MR2 was on the market for ten years when production went on hiatus until 2000 when the third generation was introduced. The MR2 was developed to offer consumers exotic car design and excitement without the exotic car price. Originally powered by Toyota's "sweet sixteen" 16-valve dual-overhead cam 1.6-liter engine, a supercharged version was added in 1988. A turbocharged version went on sale in 1991 prompting Car and Driver magazine to proclaim the MR2 Turbo as an exotic car for the rest of us."

The current MR2 Spyder is the first U.S.-market Toyota to offer a true clutchless, six-speed sequential manual transmission. The MR2 has not only proven its mettle as a "budget exotic" sports car, but succeeded in attracting performance-oriented buyers to the Toyota brand.

True. We won't ever have to worry about a generation of the Celica that puts ours to shame, at least in my opinion.

I'm sure that most Celica owners feel that their generation is best though. wink.gif

Yeah, but it's always the last generation of models that gets the most to blame for a line being discontinued smile.gif

I say we declare Variable timing with turbo lift emulation a failure, and make toyota stick actual 3L 600HP turbo'd engines in the next car.

when will toyota relize that a solara is not a sports car and that they need to get an awd turbo charged car over here!!!! toyota is saying good by to younger customers... 2005 toyota is the new oldsmoble of the 21st century

Toyota you suck !

TC is nice... but Prolly wont be a contender against evo's, wrx's and what ever honda has lined up.....

XA and XB suck they're slow and pointless.... unless you drive around with fourty 12 inch subwoofers in the back.

So much for there ever being another Turbo All-trac in the US. This BS - I haven't test driven the TC yet but in my opinion it makes an ugly replacement to the celica. Panaramic sunroof = Ugly vehicle IMO.

This is probably the worst descision Toyota has ever made. I for one feel betrayed. mad.gif

There's only one way they could make up for this.

Bring back the Supra. You know how amazing that would be? The kind of stir it would cause in the automotive industry? 240hp baseline model (Turbo'ed 3S-GTE), 360hp twinturbo model (2JZ, or some new engine). Capable of destroying everything in it's path. Mmmmmm

Personally, Iv never even really been a fan of toyotas.. my celica suprised me.Also i really doubt this is the end of toyota sports car. As were Toyota is close to top sellers. or somthing like that, They are going drop this, were the other with say sheat looks like theres no compition. Then toyota will through somthing out there to blow everyone away an take over the market. but then again.. somtimes there just stupid. Like i mean a 2.2 135 hp engine as the faster version in 6th gen celis that was just stupid.. no matter if theres a supra or not. just my 2 cents

I love toyota. They've popped out some cool cars. Not so too many recently tho. But they had it going on in the mid 90s.

Supra TT
MR2-T
Celica GT4
Lexus IS300
SC400

Oh I as far as coolest looking gen, I gotta say first gens. Japanse muscle car. I'd love to get one and drop a v8 in it. But 6g's are second best looking

i really dont think the supra will come out again
neither as a Supra nor a Volta.

although the people in Japan probably control what happens, my dad was talking to some higher-ups for Toyota in USA that said they have no intentions to make another sports car like that, but TRD will have aftermarket options($$$$).
