I think only if the stock head unit had signal outputs, which I don't know my car had an aftermarket when I bought it. I guess you could make a crossover and wire the subs in with the rear speakers but there wouldn't be enough power to drive them.

You'd use a line level converter. It converts the audio signal from your speaker wires to RCA connections. When we wired up Natalie's car, we had to use one because she wanted to use her factory head unit.

A line level converter is one option. Another is to use an amplifier with high level inputs. Basically it has the converter built in.

Lots of amps have high-level inputs...what are you looking for in a system? SQ? SPL? What kind of music do you listen to? What's your budget like?

Yeah, its a sound quality issue man.. sound quality issue. High level inputs is never good. If you're looking to spend 500 plus, you can afford a new head unit. A JL sub and an amp to drive it shouldn't be more than 400...

Are you nuts? Putting a high lever converter, amp, and sub in is a LOT less work than putting a new head unit in with RCA outs. (No offense meant) but yeah, if it's just the amount of work, new HU = MUCH easier This post has been edited by shid: Aug 18, 2004 - 10:07 PM |

Your sound quality won't get any worse when you add a sub to a stock car's audio setup. But, your entire will most likely not sound near as good with a stock unit as it would with a good aftermarket head unit. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

Actually coom, it will; he's got to split that signal line off of somewhere. and if he gets a new head unit, he DOESN'T have to split it, and just runs easy peasy RCA wires. |

A good line out converter also is like a line driver...it relies on external power to boost the signal going to the amps, and a good line out converter won't make an audible difference on the speakers that are on the lines that you splice into. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...
