ok i emailed elprototypes and they said

Hello:

Based upon our experience, this is not a simple job.

Testing, splicing and configuring for the application is about 30 hours. This assumes both harnesses are in original undamaged condition.

Note: We solder all joints and match all wire gauges to avoid the risk of damage to the vehicle.

The flat rate for this service is $1,500. The hourly rate is $65. / hour for damaged harnesses or repair of modified harnesses.

By now you may be experiencing "sticker" shock; however, we would like to assure you that the cost is real, as is the time to do it properly. (We do a lot of repairs to harnesses that have been improperly modified and the total cost is invariably higher for the customer.)

Regards,

ELP

is there not anyone who an do it cheaper, and i though someone told me ^they did their harness for $300

Mike(Qatar) used to do harnesses for people, but lately he's had trouble and some of his harnesses haven't worked. In addition, he hasn't been online much and isn't willing to help. So if I were you, I'd look into doing it yourself...Lagos and DG have been posting a lot of good information about the wiring, and they're very knowledgable and helpful. smile.gif

If you're not up to it, there's a shop in Florida called Jamasco I believe, and they do 3S-GTE swaps into Celicas...they could probably do your harness for you.

Oh, and EL Prototypes is kind of slow from what I hear. Ray's car was there forever for his swap, so if you do get your harness done by them, make sure that they'll do it in a timely manner.

you guys realize that he is refering to mike there. i think el prototypes has fixed about 4-6 harnesses that mike messed up.

when i was stuck on my harness, i looked in the phone book and found a few local places that claim to do car electrical work. i called them up and explained to them about my swap, and the guy was very confidednt that he could get my car running. so just call up and see if any places around you do harness work.

if you are still stuck, im sure DG or i could try to help you out as best as we can.

a lot of people talk smack about Mike. BUT, you have to remember that there are a few that did get great work from him. I'm one of them. My harness arrived on time and in perfect conditions. Plug and Play.

I know nobody's said this yet, but please don't say that he's always done FOOKED up work, cause he's helped a lot of others here on this board as well.

El Prototype is a great place to send your harness IF you know for a fact that you can't handle the work. I personaly, am not that great with electrical, so i would go with someone who knows what they're doing and has the experience to back it up.

Good luck dude. I hope you get it done properly, no matter who does it.

i never really looked to far into wiring for any swap

but i know for a fact that extending wires in the harness is one of the major steps

if i were to do a swap, i would try and make a water tight box for the ECU to be mounted in the engine bay and that way only deal with the wires for the gauge cluster and AC control to be extended to the ECU/proper place on 3sgte harness.

not sure if that would work too well

maybe some of the guys who have done the wiring themselves could comment.

other than that, spring an extra $1200 for an EMS. make your own harness(that i know i could do easily, making a hybrid harness would be much harder imo)

a friend of mine did it on his 240z turbo. two wires for each injector(12). wires to the crank angle sensor(3), signal wires to each coilpack(6) wires for map sensor(3) and intake temp sensor(1). total of 25 wires that connect to the engine(control wise, gauges require their signal wires, but thats easy to do), starting with brand new connectors and wires.

97sccelica,

putting the ecu in the engine bay wouldnt be a good idea. you can just cut a hole in your firewall, right behind the ecu. thats what i did, and my harness fits perfectly without the need to extend any if the wires.

i did this also.

In reality, the re-wiring on the ecu side isnt all that hard. Simply look at ur ST ecu pinout and 3SGTE pin out, and match up the pins, then connect the wires.

So is the fuse box wiring the worst part of the wiring then? Also, I've heard that you only have to re-wire the third plug that goes to the ECU for the ST185 3S-GTE swap...is that true?

there are a few ways you could do the wiring. for the fuse box you have to take about 3-4 plugs and wire them into on big fuse box plug on the stock box. ive also seen some people avoid doing this by using 2 fuse boxes. one st185 box and one st204box. i dont really know whats involed in making that work, but ive seen it done.

for the ecu, the 1st 2 plugs just plug right in. the 3rd ecu plug needs to be rewired tho. you also need to rip out the fuel pump relay from your clip and rewire it driectly into your ecu.

besides that, there are 3 plugs on the 3sgte harness that connect to 3 plugs right above the ecu. because those plugs are ment to connect to a 5th gen, you have to convert them to 6th gen plugs.

And those three plugs are the body harness, or interior, plugs, right? For things such as the climate control, gauge cluster, tail-lights, headlights, etc.?

So would you need to cut the ECU-side plugs off of your stock harness and the 3S-GTE harness and then wire your stock ECU-side plugs onto the 3S-GTE's harness? Was that process hard? Also, where'd you find wiring diagrams for that...are there any posted online or would someone need to buy the book from Toyota?

I have a diagram from Mike, although its not 100% perfect (some colors are different, some plugs not needed) I managed to get it working basing 90% of it on the diagram.

And you will cut some of the 3s harness and mate it with the 5s plugs for the interior pieces like gauge cluster and lights via the fuse box.

I took out my CC because it was in the way of the intake, I also didnt use it ever so I dont miss it. I also dont have use of the A/C but again, didnt use it dont miss it.

Talkign about all this with the 3s-gte, would you think this would be the same as the 3s-ge?? Also, as far as i understand couldnt you just take the 3 plugs that dont fit, use your orig plugs an then just splice the correct wires into your orig plugs?

yeah..i know for a fact that he doesnt always do fcuked up work...thats why i went to him in the first place because of all the recommendation... people make mistakes, i guess my wires was one of the unlucky one even after i sent the wires back to him and was returned undone and also blocking my aim, not returning my calls, and so on... but its coo..my car is running now

Did you end up finishing up the wiring yourself? Or did a shop or someone else finish it for you?
