So I know that everyone recommends buying a front clip when considering a 3SGTE engine swap (into a GT). I've noticed quite a diffence in prices in buying the engine/trans/ecu packages (in shipping as well), and I was wondering if it would be worth my while to hunt down these fabled "little pieces" everyone groans about.
I know a list of all these pieces might be too much to ask, but I guess if anyone is feeling generous... (I have searched the forums several times, but I can never find a clear definition of "little pieces" Maybe I'm blind...) |

I've though the same thing as djspray before. I mean, if you can find and engine with a trany, fully wiring harness and ecu for like about 2000 dolars less than a clip, its seems like it might be worth it to look for a MAF sensors, resister packs and igniter... What else do you need for a swap?
Many swaps that aren't clips claim to have everything for a swap, too. Such as the clip here on ebay. What do al the experts here think? Is it worth it? This post has been edited by CheesyLobster: Sep 18, 2004 - 10:28 PM |

Better get a full clip. That way, you can transfer over the major parts of the harness that you'll need and not have to resort to reading diagrams and splicing/repinning the harness and plugs (you'll probably still have to, but not as blindly...). That work alone is well worth the clip. The actual mechanical stuff is easy...

well just wandering but lets say someone wants MR2 3sgte because of tranny with LSD and better gearing, a MR2 rear clip is alot harder to find and expensive, plus alot of you won't be able to use because its setup for the rear of the car

I disagree with this statement. -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

I also disagree. If anything, the MR2 clips are much much easier to find. They're a more practical buy considering you'll already have the tranny you want/need, but the problem is the accessory brackets and such (possibly water lines also). i believe they're set-up differently on an MR2 and the harness will also have to be modified... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I would also be converting making an auto to manual conversion. You have me convinced on buying a clip, but anything I should worry about the manual conversion since the clips will be right-hand drive? Or am I gonna be looking for US parts for the conversion....
(wish I could have found a manual in the first place) |

Should all work the same. If you have an ST, you'll need shift linkages from a GT. If you have a GT, you should be OK. As for auto to manual swap parts, the MR2 clip might lack the correct parts (clutch master cylinder, pedal, lines, etc...) so you'll have to source those from a Celica GT or something. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... dont buy an mr2 engine, unless you already have a 3sgte that you blew up or something and you can take the altinaor brackets and stuff like that and put it on your engine.
there are 2 problems with buying these swap kits......number one, they just flat out lie to you about what you will get with the kit. ive talked to so many people that said, "they said the harness wouldnt be cut, but it is" ,etc. number two, you dont know who took that engine out, and how carefull they were with it. it could have been dropped on the oil pan for all you know. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

So if you had a choice, and you could get a 3rd gen MR2 clip, or a 3rd gen GT4 clip with an awd tranny for the same price, which one would you choose?

no one here knows how to rewire an mr2 harness to work in a celica. the gt4 hanress should be pretty much plug and play.

especially if you get the body panels and dash parts. That's money in the bank. and if you could get projectors... that's almost a grand you can re-bank.
