 shift knob question, help |

Okay so i bought a new shift knob from Gilbert which is great. But the new knob is a little shorter than the stock knob so there is a small gap of maybe 1/4 inch between the bottom of the knob and the boot. So i was thinking i could just cut the shifter (the actual metal bar) down a little bit so it was flush. In doing this i would be cutting off some of the thread. So if i do cut a small portion of the thread would i still be able to put my stock shifter back on if i wanted to. thanks guys. any sugestions are welcome

Chances are you'll bend the threads where you cut it. I dunno dude...

Well the new knob doest attach by the threads so worse case is id just stick with that. but id like to have to option of putting the stock back on. I was more worried that if i cut the shifter down the stock knob wouldnt have enough thread to be tight.

Can i adjust the height that the boot comes up to make it come flush with the knob.. or can that not be changed... does it just sit where it naturally is.

yeah I cut the stock shifter. its kind of ghetto but it lets the shifter sit a little lower which I like.

You should be able to move the to of the shifter boot down or up a little. There is a little circle thing holding it where it, is just pull it up

The problem with that is if you want it to move up, it probably wont stay, and if you want it to move down, you have to bend it, making it hard to stay in its original position if you go back to stock.

ohk stellar this is what you do. first you cut the rod in your words(metal peace) go to home depot and get the tool that makes new threads make sure its metric i forgot what the tool was called they should know what your talking about but i know its not more then 10 bucks and go home then go home and make new threads on the bar.

all you need to do is move the plastic ring which holds the boot up farther up towards the knob. DONT CUT ANYTHING!!!!!

as long as you use a hack saw and cut straight across you'll be fine. don't use a grinder because the metal will melt and mushroom out and then you'll be jacked. just hack saw it up. and finding a dye that big is kind of hard esp since it's metric. you might have to hit up a sears or order it offa the net. most stores only sell it either as standard sizes or they have a kit with metric and standard in it or just a kit with metric seperate.

this is all you have to do...
Move the plastic ring up, then take electrical tape and wind the tape around the shifter right below the ring. Wrap the tape around like 10 times, so the ring cant slide down the shifter. I got a TRD knob that I had to do this with. Its simple. --------------------  |
