Hi, I haven't posted much on this forum since I registered frown.gif mainly b/c I haven't had time or money to do anything to my car, but I'd really appreciate your opinion on this. I have a 94 celi gt with 110k miles and when I drive it I can hear a metallic rattle coming from under the hood under acceleration, sometimes at low and sometimes at high RPM. This doesn't happen all the time, but it has become more frequent over the last few months to the point where now I hear it almost every time I drive the car. Has anyone had this problem or know what's wrong? Thanks

from your profile:

Performance:
K&N air filter with chrome intake pipe

I can almost guarantee (95%) thats your problem, my injen intake rattled til I put a little padding where it was hitting the side of the bay;

it's becoming more frequent because your clamps are getting looser, and letting the intake move more. Tighten up the clamps, and then see where the intake is hitting something, and then either pad that, or secure the intake better?

Nope, that can't be it. I installed the k&n filter today. However, before the k&n I used a cheap k&n immitation filter, which might have done damage to the engine??? confused.gif

Before the celi I drove an 88 subaru which if I remember correctly made the same kind of noise when going up a hill, which was also associated with burning oil like crazy and a thick cloud of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. In my car it's just the noise.

shid, before I installed the k&n filter there was no chrome pipe, just the rubber tube that came stock, and it made the same noise back then too. what do you mean by detonation Doge?

Definitely sounds more like detonation or pinging, might try a better grade of fuel. Or some combustion chamber cleaner, may have some carbon build-up raising the compression. (or possibly check the timing, may have too much advance?)

K rider, sorry, thought the pipe was always there smile.gif

Since the intake rattles more at high RPMs and high speeds; and builds up rattling over time, it was a good guess..

I dont think it sounds like detonation; what ur describing seems a little less intense than that. My guess is, if it's not the intake coming undone; it's something else.

Open the hood and listen. It could be detonation, valves, or worst, rod knock...

what's really annoying is that sometimes it makes the noise when the car starts moving from a stop and then the rattle is louder. what I also noticed is that the higher the RPM the higher the frequency of the rattle.

It doesn't do it at idle or when I rev up the engine, I can only hear the noise if the car is in gear and accelerating. Sometimes it drives perfectly normal which is very confusing and sometimes it makes that noise...I don't know what to think but thanks for all the replies so far.

Turn up the rpms under the hood... pretty straight foreward. Anyway, because it doesn't do it at idle... this increases the chances of it being a rod knock...
