Alright everyone. This is my first post and i have some questions to ask. Yesterday was the first time i drove my celica because it had some rear end damage that had to be fixed when i bought it so even though i have had it for a month and a half i only drove it once on the street. I dont know if all celicas are like this but when the rpm's went over about 4000 the car felt extremly weak (its a 99 gt) and i thought it would pull stronger because i owned a 94 st before so i was expecting a noticable difference, but like i said i was dissapointed. I also want to ask anyone with a 99 or maybe a 98 gt to look in your trunk and lift up the carpet, on the left side right behind the seat there should be some wires that go underneath the car through a hole. on my car the peice sticking out of the metal is a plastic peice that looks like a tall U shape and one of the u tubes has wires going in but the other one doesnt have anything atached to it and when i started the car i heard noises coming from the peice so i cheked it out and the empty tube was sucking air in. Is there supposed to be something attached to the tube.

Please respond with any info you might have, thank you

The top end of the 5sfe is not great. Your experience is consistent with all GT owners (or.....at least those who have not yet swapped engines yet biggrin.gif ).

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

do a cap, rotor, plugs and wires tune up. also check your tire pressue and you air fliter. if all those things check out, then what you are feeling is normal.

god, i dont even remember what a 5sfe is like.

torque peak is at 4,400rpm and hp peak is at 5,500. that'll factor in.

Sounds like the peice you're reffering to is the fuel sending unit. If you're having problems... my family runs a shop up in Chico and I can take a look at it for you.

first thank you everyone for responding. the tube in the back does have something to do with fuel because the wires underneath are connected to a box that has hoses going into the fuel tank. once again i ask any gt celica owner to look underneath their carpet in the trunk and see what is connected to the tube, on my car only one of the tubes has wires running from it the other is open and for some reason was sucking in air last night but not tonight and it still pulled the same.the tube i am talking about looks kind of like a long thin U shape. please look under the carpet, you only have to lift it up you dont have to take anything of.
also the car has much shorter gears than my 94 st did. in second gear the st went about 61 mph when it red lined but the gt went only about 54. is this normal. i know you guys are saying the gt doesnt pull strongly on top end but im pretty sure the celica st pulled stronger than the gt, i sold it to my friend so i actually drove it to the shop to look at my car. plese respond with the speeds of each gear that you experienced in your own gt so that i get an idea of whats up. thanks a lot

I always tough that my high end tourq was pritty good. I seem to take off rather quick, or maybe it comes from driving a 17 year old 1.5 ltr 96hp civic.

You are referring to low end torque. The 5sfe does have decent low end.

that sounds like the charcoal canister. i would'nt worry about it unless u have a check engine light on.

A modded ST does have a better top-end pull but it only "feels" better and is not necessarily better than the GT because the ST has a weaker pull in the mid-range. As for that part you're reffering to... now it sounds like the fuel pump.

again thanks for responding. but can anyone tell me if anything is atached to the tube that i am talking about, you just have to lift up your carpet in the trunk and look at it. also please post up your speeds for different gears so that i can see if my car is the same or different. the tube i am talking about sucks in air (sometimes, not all the time) and i find it strange that it wouldnt have been installed there because the carpet would cover it up and it wouldn have very much air to suck in. now i have no idea why the tube sucks air in, taday i drove it for maybe a total of 15 minutes and heard it at the end of my driving when i was about to shut of the car. one thing to note is that i only have a driver seat installed right now and no carpet in the back so if it happens in other gt' s then in mine i can hear it pretty loudly. thanks for all the help
