P&P your car helps out, not alot, but enough to notice a difference. I think it was like a 8-15hp increase.

I just done it with my best friend who's a mechanic. just 0 $$
We enlarged the intake an exhaust ports, lowered by 6/10, worked on valves seiges and polished the valves. I'm going to enlarge and chrome also the entire intake manifold and throttle body to have a better air flow. When I'll mount all I'll tell you which gain I'll have!! |

I just got a reply from an engine guy who said it'll cost me $700 for a full port job, valves, seals, and forged pistons. What do you think? He said it will add me about 15-20 hp. Also i'll be able to boost my turbo up to about 15psi as suppose to the 7psi now. I should be up to about 200-220hp. After I get it done i'll post the dyno report with the exact numbers.

That's actually a pretty nice gain..but for $700 i don't know...id rather save it for a turbo or a gs-gte and P&P later |

Ok, heres my philosphy on cars. Yes between the price of my Burien Turbo Kit $2500, and Ported $700, engine, plus other mods ill be lucky to pull out a 250 hp engine. Yes I can swap the engine for a 3SGTE which some say is like 200-250hp stock and have the same performance for thousands of dollars less, but then it wont be a 1996 Toyota Celica GT, 2.2ltr 5SFE engine. Damm, if im gonna change the whole meaning of what I have, I might as well just go buy a Porsch or something. My goal is to keep my car a 5SFE american version celica, but make it as fast as the rest.
Whats wrong with the 15psi. Burien Toyota says that with an intercooler and extra fuel injector I can definetly pull it off with a total of about 250hp at the engine. Its gonna take a few months to finish due to money but when I pull it off and have it tested, post the results. |

You need a new shaft cause your can't take a power like that....there's too much difference between your stock and 250HP...you'll need also a reinforced clutch and maybe engine mounts..

It can be done, but the money need to do it would be more. If you have taken that choice and do not regret it, then continue. What you might try looking at before you go out and spend alot of money is to see how well the car behave to small mods like: 1) New Filter 2) Wide Open exhaust like Greddy, Apex, HKS, Magnaflow, etc 3) Adjustable Fuel Pressure regulator. 4) Upgraded ignition system using either MSD Digital 6 or Crane Cams HI6TRC (my choice) w/ Nology M80 Profire coil. 5) once you feel that these have done there job, you can continue. 6) You can then go for a port and polish and if possible, proper vavle angles and so one. 7) You migh also want to put in some mild cams like up to 256. Anything after here depends on how your car performs. Try to get as much out NA before going turbo. Remember that is not a bad thing to change your engine to something better like a 4AGE 20v. I personally believe that these engine are to light for the car. I believe tha te 7AFE, 5SFE are well suited for these car since the celis are fairly heavy and need alot to get going. I have driving 4age 20v's and I can say that there are very discusting in normal stop and go traffic or normal lame driving. -------------------- West_Minist

not tryin to be a dick but why would you was all that money on a fuel efficency engine????? I mean seriously? ur talkin about dumpin thousands into a motor that will neve handle 250+hp??? because what your talkin about doing is gonna cost you alot more than you think its gonna... you talkin 2500 for the turbo kit.. which is a rip off buy the way... they your gonna dump 700 or so into a P&P which isnt worth it on a 5sfe - trust me here cuz I did it and it was the biggest waste of time.. you take all this into consideration and add it to the fact that the 5sfe is an egine that should NEVER be ran with boost.. the compression is way too high and the duration stroke is too long for you to effectively use the boost. Also ur usin an aluminum block... they dont hold up very well when you break somthin important - which you will do when you start messin with boost. so by the time you install all this and get the setup running correctly your gonna be close to the 5k mark... thats a hell of alot more $ than a 3sgte swap and the 3sgte is gonna have everything you need plus runs stock at 12-14 psi BTW who cars about keepin it a 5sfe?? the best thing that ever happened to my celica was the day I blew that little peanut motor to the mooon -------------------- 99 project version 3.0.. hello SEMA 2010 =) |

You just might have enlightened me.... Everything you said makes alot of sense. Im definetly gonna consider what you all told me and research somemore. Ive been looking into all these things for a while now, and will continue to do so. The engine swap does sound like a good idea, ill have to look into it alot further also. Like, what year engine will fit into the 1996 Celica? How hard it is to swap? The legalities? And well just about all that type of stuff.
Thanks for all your imput..... |

negative. that's incorrect. the GT axles and mounts will hold up just fine, even with a 3sgte. no problem. by the way, let's try and not post "definitive" information, or posts with a tone like this, if you aren't absolutley positive about the answer. this is why i don't come over here for tech help, everyone is confused or misinformed. as for turboing the 5sfe, i respect you wanting to build the 5sfe. if you just want 200-250 HP, that's the way to go. the reason the 3sgte is a nice option is for it's potential. you can build it up a LOT higher than the 5sfe. but if you are like me, i just want some more zip, not crazy amounts, just some more. i mean, who wants to drive a 500 HP monster every day? not me. -------------------- 1994 Lexus ES300

the 5sfe will hold up with a turbo kit if you keep it at low boost around 5psi or so otherwise its not gonna last forever. you cant just hook up a turbo kit and crank up the boost and think its gonna last any amount of significant time., there is a lot of preping to the motor to make a set up work on an engine like the 5sfe... practically speakin its not the best option moneywise the 3sgte is alot morepowerful and has ALL the parts you need stock and you can crank the boost way up on it and not hurt it but its ur guys cars not mine do what you want with them but you could dump thousands into a 5sfe and probably just end up blowin the motor or you could just buy a 3sgte and swap and it would still be faster than a completly built 5sfe -------------------- 99 project version 3.0.. hello SEMA 2010 =) |

If he doesn't want to go turbocharge right now, he can get a 3SGE and install that for let and turbocharge that for later. Well, all is up to him -------------------- West_Minist

Anyway, If I had a GT, I would go 3S-gte. They are tried and true engines that can do wonderous things. And on your GT, it won't take much at all to get it up and running. |
