After taking it in to the shop I've found that my engine is in good condition, but that the turbo is causing lots of smoke. They said that it has 'pretty bad' shaft play and needs to be replaced. I'm obviously already looking for a new one, but don't know if this situation is immediate and what further harm I'll cause to my turbo.
I'd like to take a few days and find a good quality turbo, but don't know how much time I have left on this one. Not sure if the remainder of its life is entirely dependent on the situation/equipment, but the volume of the smoke is about the size of a car and only spits out when I'm not pushing the accelerator down. The turbo spools fine, and can still make 7lbs. of boost. Any educated guesses would be much appreciated. Thanks. -------------------- |

The turbo can be rebuilt, but I'd rather swap it out with a useable one to buy time to do it. This is my everyday car, so I don't have the option of lettin it sit dry for days at a time.
Its white smoke, coming from the tailpipe, only spits right when I lift off the pedal. I haven't inspected the wastegate, but was told the only thing wrong with it is bad shaft play. This post has been edited by erics1one: Oct 27, 2004 - 5:22 PM -------------------- |

do you only get the smoke if your boosting when you left your foot off the gas if so check your ic piping and see if there is oil in there or check the BOV the exit part for oil.

Yeah the amount of smoke is dependent on the lbs I push. If I bring it up to 7lbs (which I don't do too often anymore) it will let out a big puff. If I'm easy on the gas and keep it at low RPMs I can sometimes drive 10-15mi without seeing anything.
Hope this confirms that its only my turbo. -------------------- |

go to www.atsracing.net you can get a newly rebuilt, upgraded ct26 for 850, and they'll refund 300 when you send back your old turbo, so you get a new turbo thats been upgraded in the end for 550

im having the same problem right now. the turbo is in the shop getting repaired. it should have NO shaft play because if there is any, oil is leaking into the exhaust side and burning out. you can check it during idle by covering the intake hole of the turbo. if there is a leak, oil will be sucked through the middle and a lil bit of smoke will be coming out the back. -------------------- |
