sooo im goin down the street and this lil ford focus zx3 pulls up next to me... i think oh no not another one. so he revs i rev we go... i had him till he hit 3rd gear and i was just gettin out of second. then he pulled, he had me by a half a car length. but still if that 3rd gear had any power i would have beat him.... so do you guys know of anything at all that can cure this auto problem. besides a 5 speed swap?? PLEASE HELP MY BABY IS TO SLOW... maybe those cars are faster than i thought.

yea the celicas third gear pulls like a little girl.

there isnt much you can do to the 7afe engine without the use of force induction. what makes me sad is the 5600 rpm redline.

you can try putting smaller tires on the front to lower the gear ratio on all the gears.

But the best part is, when you bitch about having a redline at 6200, you dont know a thing about your car.. an thats why you loose.. you need to learn your power band.. I have beaten so many cars that should have spanked me, just cause i know my car, an they dont know theres. The point is to stay in your power band, theres no reason to take it to red at all.. your doing nothing but slowing yuor self down.. and with having an auto st, your scewed.. you have like an 18 sec car.

i agree with this..

the ST loses power @ anything above 4000rpm.

if you want power, turbo the car. any mods you do to the 7afe will be external in nature. meaning, you won't see any signifigant gains from intake/exhaust/header.

that being said, if you were serious about performance, worry about cutting corners on another aspect of the car : weight.

smaller wheels, 5 speed transmission swap, take out back seat, drive with a quarter tank of gas, etc.

it sounds stupid, but every little bit can make a difference. until you can afford a turbo / swap, this is the only way to go. you won't do anything by building up the 7a, it isn't a performing motor.

I went from a 94 ST auto, sold it. Next year boutght my 95 GT 5 Speed, night and day man. Even without weight reduction measures Im sure it would make short work of some punk in a Focus hehe. Also yes know your powerband

yeah but thats the peak, and if you know about power bands, it drops after peak horibly.. thats why you go to say 5200 and then shift so when your shifting your only droping to say 4200.. still in power band, and hp is not what your really looking for.ts the increase in trq band, witch starts at 2500 .. Thats why you notice your car hitting up around 3k .. Cause hp is only a mathmatical figure from trq.

well yeah I know all of that. but from driving my own car I will tell you that shifting at ~5800 is about optimal for what mods I have. I haven't analyzed my powerband nor do I plan to, this is still a 7a we are talking about, I'm just giving the guy my 2 cents

i was just making a statment that it redlines at 6200 rather then the 5600 someone had stated, but yes ur right no need to take it that high, i usally shift right around 5800, or at least i try to. smile.gif

the 1.8L has a powerband?? Umm...not much...Its slow no mater how you look at it... I think the car is just as fast when you drive it normal and drive it to redline smile.gif Just race it to be funny. I got beat by a newer corolla S in my ST 5spd.

Contrary to the numbers... the 7AFE delivers a very flat torque band, although peaking at 2500 rpms... doesn't dramatically drop off till about 5000 rpms. The 7AFE better utilizes the delivered powerband in acceleration than say the 5SFE. I always shift at fuel-cut... which is around 6700 rpms for my ST (some models redline at 5600 with a 6200 fuel-cut. Some redline at 6200 with a 6700 rpm fuel-cut.) and I've consistantly run faster times that way.

yes a echo could..just about anything can take a ST...i dont think there is a newer car out that couldnt. even i hybrid would take it i bet. Now a older car not running in prime condition can be had by a ST...for instance my friend has a 88' grand prix 2.8L v6 with 180k miles and i can take him. 1st and 2nd we are even and 3rd i pull him. BTW, he runs 19's are the track smile.gif hahaha

heh yeah.. that's the sad thing about the ST, i notice no difference between normal driving & hitting the redline.. it's sad really. oh well..
