Considering doing the engine swap... Id like to know what year and type of engine did you guys put into your cars. I have a 1996 GT. Did you guys use the GT-Four or the MR2?

They are the both the same, but then again they ain't!
The GT4 is a ST205 = 265HP
The MR2 is a SW20 = 245HP (i think)

The GT4 has to be imported as a front clip that way you get the ECU and wiring harness with it.
The MR2 is probly alot easier to come by since they are already in the US (if that's where you is, forgot to look)

or you can use a st185 5th gen alltrac, which some are also in the US but a lil harder to find than the mr2s

Actually, the Japanese version of the GT-Four has 251 horsepower at 6000 rpm. And the North American version of the MR2's 3S-GTE produces 200 horsepower at 6000 rpm.

And by the way, I think almost everyone who has done the swap or is doing it uses the engine from a Celica GT-Four(And it's usually the ST185 or ST205), because I think it's harder to swap the MR2's 3S-GTE into a Celica for various reasons(I can't remember them off the top of my head though.)

main reason is you have to switch it from a reverse rear mount to a front horizontal mount, can get confusing cuz you have nothing to look off of...

Someone said that if you have a 98+ US celica then you can't do the swap due to that binary codes in the ECU havn't been released yet, but i don't know about that.
So as far as the JDM engine, i would only assume that it would be the same. So try to find one that is the same year as yours to play it safe. But i'm gonna try for a 96/97 so i keep it under the 98 fear and that way it will have a higher chance of havin less miles.

st205 r/c in a 94 GT

also if your gonna do the swap us a celica sorced 3sgte dont us the MR2 one... granted it easier and ontop of what K2 said already about it the wiring is all messed up.. yea you can lenghten the engine harness fine but the dash harness doesnt wire up verywell with the MR2 ECU.. if you gonna do this route get a alltrac ecu instead of the MR2 one cuz it will save you alot of hassle...

personally I would try and get the st205 3sgte instead of the st185 or st165 ones as they are slower versions and they dont have all of the options as the st205. the only nice thing about the st185 that I wish the st205 had was the variable intake manifold which has butterflys in the end of the intake manifold runners that open up at higher RPM... that has ALOT of potential

also for the tranny use the 3sge one for FWD

The one that can be found in the 5th Gen. How hard is it to find that one and how much horsepower does it output.

Thanx biggrin.gif
