I screwed around with my 240sx which was a sports car (the celica isn't). I never got caught, then again I never blindly did stupid crap like that.

Yes i have done this in the winter in a empty parking lot far away from a police station. I would never do something like that in front of a police station but maybe it's just me.

240SX's are considered a sports coupe.. Just like Celica's.. They are just RWD, and have good weight distribution.. But I agree.. Doing stupid stuff like that is bad for you. Especially in a unknown area.. My opinion though.. |

Drifting is the new cool thing to do... so all of the import ricers are jumping or trying to jump on the bandwagon. FWD cars don't drift. Spinning a FWD car only means you're an idiot... regardless of where its done. Spinning out is relatively easy to do, and a relatively easy way to end your life. You can't feint drift a FWD car, contrary to what Kamix says, so if you wanna learn the art of drift... buy a car that can actually "drift" drift (RWD)... Drifting is like figure skating... Racing is like speed skating... I'd rather race...

I rather drift then race. My car is way to slow compared to my friends. So i do something they don't want to do with their cars...DRIFT. Havn't you seen Initial D? They have EK9 and DC2 drifting. Your probobly saying that its because its anime but i've seen a pro drifter called Ucchi drift in a FWD car in Osaka before. It wasn't beautiful like the RWD cars but he had the back sliding and counter steering and all, Very Impressive.

not to get too far off topic but re: ff cars driftings its really a matter of definition. there was a nice option vid floating around a while back of some k-cars drifting flawlessly. bottom line though is they are still dragging their asses around, albeit with a lot of suspension mods and unorthodox wheel/tire combos

Drifting is basially loss of traction at all 4 wheels. The cult term "Drifting" is maintaining that. When it happens on a FWD car... it's almost always understeer. As far as "drifting" goes... go post about your FWD drifting exploits on a drifting webboard and you'll see what I mean. People are annoyed to death. I hear drift stories from ricers all day long. It goes like this... "Hey, is that your hachi roku?" I reply, "That's my Corolla." Then they ask, "Do you drift?" I answer, "No... I race." They say, "Man, you should drift... drifting is awesome. You should see my Civic/Integra/Neon/Focus/etc... Drift!"... Then I chuckle and leave them in their disillusion. I'll assure you... getting a FWD car to go into a controlled drift is all about the e-brake and the rear will only slide for a second or so before it corrects. As far as initial D goes... just mentioning that makes you one of those guys trying to get in on the fad. FYI... most cars need to have a bit of power before controlled drifting can be done. Being underpowered hurts you there also. Anyway, none of the FWD cars in Initial D ever drifted. I'm not saying a FWD car can't slide its tail or drift as in lose traction at all 4 wheels... I'm just saying... don't play it off like you're Takumi or something... just because it's the new cool thing to do. FWD can't do the "drift" as referred to in a cult term... but they can do the drift (like all other cars) like loss of traction in 4 wheels...
On another note: The drifting fad is only gonna get bigger. My cousin just traded his stock 91 240sx for a nearly mint condition 94 Civic Hatchback with a B16A swap. Basically, he traded a 240 that's worth roughly 2000.00 for a Civic hatch that can be estimated at around 4000-5000 dollars... EVERYONE is trying to get in on the drifting scene now. Since AE86 Corollas are difficult to find and typically expensive... they buy the 240s... heh... Unbalancing the car to swing the rear end out on a FWD car is a proven technique and has been used by FWD rally drivers for decades, end of story. I didn't say it was drifting (hell no), I just said it's the closest to drifting you are going to get with a FWD. I don't have any video handy, but Tiff Needell (that british chump) did a very good demonstration of this move on Top Gear. |

That's a feint powerslide. Weightshift to reduce traction to one corner of the car then induce understeer around a corner (FF only). The ass-end kicks out and drags for about a second then when the understeer happens, it corrects and straightens out. If you've EVER raced an FF machine... you don't gas is during apex around a corner. That'll cause massive understeer and that's bad. FWD slide techniques are pretty useless on pavement... in exception to some e-brake techniques... We've been over this before... and you've yet to demonstrate anything aside from hearsay. I'm not saying it's not a proven technique... it's just not within the context of this debate. We're talking about drifting... what you describe is a feint drift technique for a RWD car but doesn't apply to a FWD car... Also... doing it on dirt and pavement are two different things... so just quit it already. I've seen/tried just about everything there is to see/try as far as racing and drifting is concerned. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"
