Uh its remembrance day in Canada. We remember the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the country. Most of the poppy imagery comes from the flander's fields which was covered in poppies. A lot of people lost their lives there.
Its weird though, and archaic and kind of strange... but it Canadian. -------------------- ![]() (\__/) (='.'=) This is bunny. Copy and paste bunny into your (")_(") signature to help him gain world domination. |

hahaha yeah the Canadian army is kind of hilarious sometimes because of its smallness. Kind of like the Australian army aswell. I think the problem was that we all fought under the union jack and not our own flags, so Britain gets most of the credit. If history serves me correctly, Canada's major WWI victory was at Vimy Ridge. In WWII our army was deployed wherever the brits were. We also took part in D-day by assaulting Juno beach and maybe another beach I forget. Canadians also fought durring the Korean war. Currently our forces are deployed as part of the "coalition of the willing" deployed in Afghanistan. The only thing I really hear of them doing is being blown up by FF or sniping people, I'm not too sure what they do.
So yeah, Canada has an army and we fight wars... we're not just very many (compared to other countries) or even apparent to the general population..... like ninjas ![]() -------------------- ![]() (\__/) (='.'=) This is bunny. Australia has a military as well?! When did this happen?! ![]() Seriously though, I never heard of that before. I thought Japan didn't have a military either. Like after WWII some peace treaty between USA and Japan had an agreement that USA would protect them. Then I find they do have one!!! I mean absolutely no offense to Canada, but seriously... I guess but its a bit different though. There are newspapers published every day and have been for the past 300 or so years. Before that we would have to wait for someone to write something down. Our knowledge of Roman history is very limited and some works are even questionable. For modern civilization our resource of knowledge is vast and its almost impossible to know the entire history of the country you are in, so I find it kind of surprising when someone would know more about an ancient civilization than their own modern country considering the infinite library of material we can look at and I'm a bit ashamed that with that huge resource, I know more about Rome (and even America) then I know about Canada. -------------------- ![]() (\__/) (='.'=) This is bunny. To clarify, during WWI Canadians sent about a third of our population to war in one form or another, and were so successful that we became known as the stormtroopers of the British Empire. Essentially, if there was a nut too tough for any other troops to crack, the Canadians went in. Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Ypres (the only troops not to break under the first use of chemical weapons), etc. And guess which country could claim to have shot down the Red Baron?
WWII was the true coming-out party for Canada as a nation and a power. Canada joined the war in 1939, and was the third major Allied power until the U.S. joined in 1942. We were responsible for ensuring the safety of the Atlantic shipping lanes, which basically meant it was the Canadian navy that went up against the German navy and U-boat fleet in the Battle of the Atlantic and Battle of the St. Laurence. By war's end, Canada had the world's third largest navy. Canadians also formed 30% of "British" air strength during the Battle of Britain. We launched the first assault on Nazi-occupied Europe, and in the Normandy invasion we penetrated farther than either the American or British forces (only three countries participated in the Normandy landing). Canadians were effectively assigned the task of freeing Holland -- to this day, Holland sends boatloads of tulips in thanks. We were in Africa, and were the first troops to land in Sicily, and later broke the Hitler Line, considered the most fortified position in Italy. At home, Canada operated the Commonwealth Air Training Plan, which was responsible for training most of the pilots who flew in Commonwealth militaries during the war. One million Canadians out of eight million served in WWII, and until the last year, it was done entirely with volunteers. |
