I heard once that subs can possibly be fitted in the back where the 6.5's or whatever go.
I was thinking of a fiber glass incloser with the a sub on each side. I figured it would go well with my rmb8's in the front and maybe new 4"s speakers in the front. (yes i have an 8 speaker set up) I dont want to run a box for room issues and figued it would be a fun project if it can be dun. |

Yep, you could put a sub back there...a ten would fit...an eight would be easier. The photos below are my Infinity Reference 10" sub held up where I planned on putting it.
And I 'glassed the first couple layers of the enclosure... ...but then gave up on the project. I did put my amp on the other side though.

I also plan on putting some 10's or 8's in there when I get around to doing the sound system.. I think it would be a cool place that would flow nicesly with the cars interior

Cool im glad to hear the rumor to be true.
Would the sub be best sat flush with the stock speaker hole or offset a bit. Ive heard laying glass can be fun and a new thing to learn. Its also something id love to do. Would i just have to glass the back portion or would a custom box made of fiber glass and made to fit in that space be best. How many layers would be best to lay. I also want to put a sub on each side and run the amp either under a chair or in the back some where. I noticed in the pix that you were only planing to put a sub on one side. Is there any reason y putting a sub on both sides would be bad. |

im not sure on this, never put anything bigger than a 6 1/2" midbass driver in the back, but i would think if you made a box for it, it would perform better? i bet that Infinity will sound good back there, please let me know how that sounds. also if you do need a box, look for a sub that does well in small spaces, like a JL W0 or something....

i just noticed that thats a coupe right.
I dont know how the space looks on a hatch but i wonder if it would make a diffrence in the amount of space for the sub to work off of. Hey Coomer how were you planing to enclose the whole box for the sub? And a more important question would be why did you stop? Im not a big audio expert but how do you think they would sound if dun correctly? thanks a bunch This post has been edited by urbandork: Nov 21, 2004 - 4:38 AM |

I was going to enclose the sub in a sealed enclosure that would stick through a hole I'd cut in the side panel. I stopped because I realized that it was going to be a ton of work to do it the way I wanted, and I didn't have time. If done correctly, it'd sound great I think. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

Nope, there's no more room back there for speakers...I tore the rear speakers out years ago, because I don't like rear fill at all. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

Do you think theres enough space in there to put a 10" sub in with no holes to the stock panel.

Yes, it could be done with a shallow depth sub such as Pioneer's new one or something. However, you'd need a hole in the panel or tons and tons of sound deadening and stiffening for that back panel, because it would rattle so badly with a sub enclosed inside it. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

Coomer i direct this question toward you because uve actually seen the area in question.
I was thinking in stead of fiber glass can i just seal the area behind the pannel with that bed liner stuff for trucks. Its air/water tight and can be laid down easily. I plan on sealing off any seams or cracks with that foam stuff, shaving the foam down for smother curves (for looks) and then painting on that bed liner stuff. |
